STABBING: Police Cannot Confirm Hyattsville Homicide Was Related to Shoes

“It’s pretty scary, it’s pretty sad stuff,” said Hyattsville resident Billy Shulman in the ABC7 video. “I mean kids do crazy things, um, but, it’s just unbelievable.”

At midnight, some stores at the , which is just west of — Smith-Matthews was stabbed at a plaza there — were set to sell the new electronic blue version of Nike Air Foamposites Pro. The shoe's release was big news for sneaker fans.

Cpl. E. Johnson of the Prince George’s County Police said she has heard the rumors about shoes being the motive for the stabbing but that she could not confirm it.

Police have no new information on the crime and no suspects in custody at this time, she said.

Workers at Foot Locker, Shoe City and other footwear stores at the mall said people began lining up for the sneakers about 8 p.m. Thursday. Photos posted to Twitter show a line coming out of a mall exit wrapped around Target. One person who was there estimated that about 300 people were in the line. He said police were called when some minor scuffles erupted.

said police arrived on the scene and quashed any upsets, shutting down the mall and sending people away. There weren’t any injuries or arrests made in that situation, he said.

Workers at some stores in the mall said they sold out of the adult-size Nike Foamposites within a few hours of the mall's opening on Friday morning.
