Officer ID'd in Friday Shooting Incident

County detective fires gun after 19-year-old Ryan Dorn attempted to grab weapon during struggle in Brentwood.

The Prince George's County Police have identified a suspect involved in a Friday night struggle which saw a .

Cottage City resident Ryan Keith Dorn, age 19, was arrested and charged with second degree assault and attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer. He is currently being held by the Department of Corrections in Upper Marlboro.

At about 9:40 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, detectives working with the District I Robbery Suppression Team on assignment near the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue and 38th Street witnessed two men, one of whom was wearing a mask, walk into the Lowest Price Gas station at the 3800 block of Rhode Island Avenue.

Fearing that the men were about to rob the gas station, the detectives confronted the suspects. At that point, one of the suspects took a swing at one of the officers before trying to run away. The officer gave chase, catching up with the Dorn a short distance later. A struggle ensued, and police say Dorn tried to grab the officer's gun.

"Fearing that the suspect was attempting to take control of his firearm, the officer discharged his weapon at the suspect and made the apprehension," according to  a press release issued by the Prince George's County Police Department.

Cpl. Henry Tippett, public affairs officer with the county police, said that the detective initially thought that Dorn was holding a weapon but had discarded it during the foot chase. Tippett says that no weapon was recovered from the scene.

The detective who fired his gun is identified as Cpl. Donald Taylor, a 13 year veteran of the police force assigned to the District I Bureau of Patrol. He has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident.

Police did not charge the second subject with a crime, noting that he did not flee and cooperated with police investigators on the scene.
