Update: Shooting of 13-Year-Old Likely Gang Related

Police said a young shooter opened fire into a crowd near Nicholson Street near Maryhurst Drive in Hyattsville.

Update, June 21, 3:56 p.m.: A 13-year-old boy who was shot by another youth on June 3 was released from hospital on June 9, according to Det. Scott Ratty of the Hyattsville Police Department.

The child was taken home by family and was in better condition. The bullet that caught him is lodged in his liver and no other attempts to remove it are scheduled as of now, Ratty stated in an email.

Police are still looking for another suspect in this case, said Sgt. Chris Purvis, of the HPD, adding that he believes it to be gang related.

The alleged shooters were tired of MS-13 members picking on them and went out looking for MS-13 on the night of June 3, Purvis said. He does not believe that the victim was a member of MS-13.

The shooting was not school related, Purvis said.

No other updates in this case have been made public as of this time.

Update, June 6, 9:40 p.m.: According to Lt. Mark Roski of the Hyattsville Police Department, the victim in Friday night's shooting is in ICU but has been upgraded to stable condition.

"We did make an arrest on one of the suspects and we are still continuing our investigation," Roski said.

Patch is continuing to look into this story and will update you tomorrow with details about where juvenile offenders are held.
