Update: Shooting of 13-Year-Old Likely Gang Related

Police said a young shooter opened fire into a crowd near Nicholson Street near Maryhurst Drive in Hyattsville.

Update, June 21, 3:56 p.m.: A 13-year-old boy who was shot by another youth on June 3 was released from hospital on June 9, according to Det. Scott Ratty of the Hyattsville Police Department.

The child was taken home by family and was in better condition. The bullet that caught him is lodged in his liver and no other attempts to remove it are scheduled as of now, Ratty stated in an email.

Police are still looking for another suspect in this case, said Sgt. Chris Purvis, of the HPD, adding that he believes it to be gang related.

The alleged shooters were tired of MS-13 members picking on them and went out looking for MS-13 on the night of June 3, Purvis said. He does not believe that the victim was a member of MS-13.

The shooting was not school related, Purvis said.

No other updates in this case have been made public as of this time.

Update, June 6, 9:40 p.m.: According to Lt. Mark Roski of the Hyattsville Police Department, the victim in Friday night's shooting is in ICU but has been upgraded to stable condition.

"We did make an arrest on one of the suspects and we are still continuing our investigation," Roski said.

Update, 11:22 p.m.: The Hyattsville Police Department was called to the scene of a shooting at the 5800 block of Maryhurst Drive at 4:40 p.m., according to the city's Safe City Alert system.

When officers arrived they found a boy who was shot once but was alert and talking, the alert read.

The suspect, another boy who was later arrested by City of Hyattsville detectives, opened fire on a group in which the victim was standing. No one else was shot, according to the alert, which arrived in email in boxes around 8:30 p.m.

Police aren't sure what the motive was, but with the shooter in custody detectives hope to find out quickly.

The victim, who is in critical condition, is at a local hospital being treated for his injuries.

Original post, 7:30 p.m.: Patch is on the scene of an alleged shooting on Nicholson Street near Maryhurst Drive in Hyattsville.

According to preliminary reports, the victim is a 13-year-old boy who was shot in the hip. The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

Officials on the scene said they are looking for a suspect. Someone in a yellow T-shirt was seen fleeing from the scene.
