Bill Could Fund Hyattsville Parking Garage

Legislators in Annapolis are working on a bill that could give nearly $1 million in grant money to the city for construction of a downtown parking garage.

Business owners and their patrons , so now state legislators have proposed granting $950,000 to the city to construct another parking garage to solve the problem. 

It's all a part of Senate Bill 490, sponsored by Sen. Paul Pinsky (D-Prince George's). If the bill passes, Hyattsville, with a $16 million operating budget in 2011, would still have to match the grant.

City officials are still working out details like number of spaces and total cost for the parking garage proposed for Hamilton Street, according to a report in The Washington Post.

"We have housing, retail, restaurants and other amenities, and we want to have enough parking to accommodate the traffic coming to this area," Mayor Marc Tartaro told The Washington Post. 

But the Post's story also included a word of caution from College Park officials who said their $9 million parking garage in 2009 has yet to fulfill the economic promises foretold by planners.
