Budget Hangover Continues for Hyattsville Council

City Council takes up unresolved retiree benefits issue tonight.

While many other local legislative bodies are in the midst of summer recesses, the Hyattsville City Council will be taking up one large unresolved budget issue: revisions to the city's retiree health insurance benefit program.

The $14.4 million budget approved in late June, only days before the start of the fiscal year, was constructed around a proposed "placeholder" retiree health care plan which would save the city more than $500,000 if officially adopted within the next few weeks.

The plan isn't officially adopted, though, as city council members are keen to find out how it will affect the two retirees receiving disability benefits resulting from their work with the city.

As it stands now, the city is still funding the program on a pay-go basis.
