Hiles Files For Re-Election Run

Hyattsville City Council Vice President David Hiles officially registered to seek a second term representing Ward 2, becoming one of the first candidates to file for this spring's municipal election. 

Hiles, who has lived in Hyattsville since 2007 with Jenny Reinhardt, his wife of 26 years, has served as one of the city's two Ward 2 representatives since he was first elected to his seat in 2009 when he narrowly defeated Tom Lopresti and Alicia Joseph. In 2011, following the last biennial city election, Hiles was elected to his post as the council vice president. The position gives him a seat on the city's executive committee, along with Mayor Marc Tartaro and Council President Matt McKnight (Ward 3). The committee holds a lot of power to set the agenda for the city council's meetings. 

Hiles currently works as a supervisory economist at the Bureau of Labor Statistics within the Department of Labor. He has been working in a supervisory role with the federal government since 1991 and commands a staff of 12 whose current focus is examining county level employment data. 

"I know a lot about recruiting and hiring people," said Hiles, explaining how his job experience could translate into the realm of local legislating. "In the city, we are aware that we need to look for people with talent, because we can train in skill."

Hiles said that his decision to run for re-election was motivated by a desire to improve services for the city's residents, a process which he said he has championed over his first term. 

He noted the Hyattsville City Council's decision to move yard waste collection to Mondays, citywide, as an example of a legislative move which made the city's services easier for residents to understand and take advantage of. 

Hiles also noted a desire to see through efforts to address long-term issues within the city administration, such as the looming post-employment benefits liability, reducing workers compensation liability issues, and staffing key posts, now or soon-to-be vacant, within the city's bureaucratic directorships. 

Hiles, a first generation American born to British parents, also has  a lot experience coaching youth soccer, and was heavily involved in the Hyattsville, Brentwood and Mount Rainier Boys and Girls Club. Between 2006 and 2010, .

Hiles was raised in Austin, TX, and in 1985 earned a bachelors degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin.

The Hyattsville's next municipal election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7. One other candidate, Patrick Paschall from Ward 3, also filed to run for city council earlier today.
