Hyattsville Budget: Rose on Staffing

City Administrator Gregory Rose spoke to Patch about a range of topics related to what is planned for Hyattsville's fiscal future. Here are his thoughts on the removal of some of the city's staff positions.

“We think we’ve modified the operations so we don’t believe that those driver positions will be necessary,” Rose said.

The City Council’s approval of outsourcing the city’s white goods operation will free up two staffers with commercial drivers licenses who can be cross-trained and used as drivers.

The initial proposed budget deleted the unfilled positions of Human Resources Manager and Deputy Treasurer.

“Certainly those two positions are needed there’s no question, it’s just whether we can afford them and as we fine tune those numbers we probably will find that we can afford one of them, probably not both of them,” Rose said. “So we’re still taking a look into that.

“If you look at the challenges that we have with meeting our infrastructure needs for the city and then you couple that with … operating cost we’re running a very tight budget. And those positions would have thrown our alignment of expenses and revenues off.”

would like to see that position put back into this coming fiscal year’s budget.

“I have a concern about that because we’re getting a bigger budget,” he said. “We have an excellent treasurer on hand … I just think it’s important to use to think about ways that we can put that back into the budget.”

The council is scheduled to meet on May 31 to further discuss the budget.
