Hyattsville CX Raises $3K For Special Olympics

Later, the Hyattsville City Council unanimously approves request to use Magruder Park for 2013 CX.

This past October's Hyattsville CX, a cyclocross race held at Magruder Park, raised $3,000 for the Prince George's County Special Olympics program. At last night's Hyattsville City Council meeting, race organizers presented an oversized check to county Special Olympics athletes and officials.

Eric Griffin, President of the Route 1 Velo cycling club which helped organize the race, said revenue was down this year because because of an increase in overhead costs and lower attendance (likely caused by the first rainy Hyattsville CX in the event's history) hurting concession sales.

"There weren't as many spectators spending as much time there," said Griffin in a brief interview. "All three years we've had 70 degrees and sunny weather, and this year it was 50 degrees and rainy."

Later in the meeting, the Hyattsville City Council unanimously passed a measure approving a request to use the park for the next edition of the cyclocross race on Oct. 6, 2013.

"The Hyattsville CX has become an incredibly successful event for the city of Hyattsville," said Abby Sandel, director of the Hyattsville Department of Community Services, during last night's meeting. "Very few communities can say that they have an event at this level in the city's largest park. It is a credit to the city that it happens here."

The Hyattsville CX was started in 2008 by Route 1 Velo and CXHairs
