Hyattsville Mayor Avoids Censure

Citing apologies from Mayor Marc Tartaro, council members table motion to censure.

The Hyattsville City Council voted 10-1 to indefinitely table a motion to censure Mayor Marc Tartaro. Oddly, only Mayor Marc Tartaro voted against the move to table the motion.

The motion to censure was originally motivated by complaints that Tartaro failed to disclose details of meetings with the developers of the proposed Safeway on East-West Highway and that he included measures on city council agendas on behalf of city council members without their knowledge.

In a brief discussion of the motion to censure held during Monday's city council meeting, Council Member Tim Hunt and Council Member Patrick Paschall (both Ward 3), said that the mayor had learned his lesson.

"It is important to move forward," said Hunt during discussion.

Both Hunt and Paschall said they took Tartaro at his word when, during the last city council meeting, he promised to be more cognizant of conducting city business according to the city council's approved policies and procedures.

"I genuinely do take him at his word, and he is now aware of the sense of the council moving forward," said Paschall.

Council Member Shani Warner (Ward 2) agreed, saying that there were more important things for the council to tackle.

"Every minute that we spend up here fighting among ourselves...hinders our work to improve Hyattsville," said Warner "I feel that this motion has had an effect. It is now time for us to put this behind us and move forward with the work of the city and to try very hard to turn over a new leaf and work together collectively."
