Microburst Shelter Closes, Donations Needed

Bladensburg High School shelter closes, but resources are still available for displaced residents at Landover center.

A shelter for victims of closed yesterday afternoon.

The shelter, located at Bladensburg High School, In all, more than 600 area residents were displaced when the storm dealt heavy damage to a number of homes and apartments. 

County emergency management officials will continue to operate a satellite service center at 425 Brightseat Road in Landover, open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There, residents affected by the storm will be able to seek assistance for their disaster related needs.

“Over the past week, nearly a thousand County, State, and municipal employees along with over a hundred of volunteers have responded to the damage caused by last Friday's microburst" said County Executive Rushern Baker in a press release.  “This has been a very difficult week for many of our County's residents impacted by last Friday's storm, I am extremely grateful for our agencies collaborations and outreach of support to our impacted residents. ."

County officials said that long-term housing has been found for most of the displaced residents, and others have been able to find temporary housing.

Now turn the task turns to completing a disaster assessment. 

"The county is currently continuing to total damages from this microburst and " read a press release sent by the Prince George's County Office of Emergency Management.
