New Blood in Hyattsville After Newbies Topple Incumbents

In Ward 1, which includes , Hollingsworth won by 30 votes, ousting Dudrow, who has served on the council, in two phases, for more than 30 years.

“I’m very excited,” Hollingsworth said, adding that the first thing she’s going to do after the busy election season is sleep. “I’m going to go to , grab another beer and then get ready for May 16.”

Tuesday’s winners will be officially seated in fewer than two weeks.

“I really didn’t know what to expect, to be honest,” Hollingsworth said.

, while William Jenne won seven.

Because won his bid for mayor, his seat on the council will become vacant, and a special election will be held for the remaining two years of his term.

Dudrow said he will not run in the special election because he lost Tuesday night. Matirne said he has not decided if he will run in the special election. Jenne was not present when the results were announced.

In Ward 2, mother-to-be Shani Warner toppled by 52 votes and beat by 191 votes.

“I’m very happy, and I’m really grateful for all the work and dedication that Bill Tierney has put into the job. I look forward to working with him in the transition," she said. "This is great. Really, I’m really happy.”

Tierney, who is the descendant of Hyattsville’s first mayor, Michael V. Tierney, did not appear at City Hall for the announcement of results. He won his first election in 2006 in a special election for Ward 2 when then councilmember Scott Wythe stepped down citing relocation out of state.
