Opening Day Sees Two File For Council Races

On the first day of the Hyattsville City Council's biennial election campaign filing period saw two city residents, including one incumbent, register to run in May's election.

Council Vice President David Hiles (Ward 2), who had previously said he would be seeking a second term, made his candidacy official yesterday. The six-year Hyattsville resident said he would use a second term to try and simplify the city's services and continue strides to address long term issues within city government, including a focus on filing key administrative vacancies. Opening day's other filing came from a lawyer and policy advisor with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Paschall has lived in Hyattsville for a little more than a year now, but is already involved in the Hyattsville Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association and is a Commissioner on the recently formed Hyattsville Ethics Commission. The registration deadline for candidates interested in running for city council is March 25. Half of Hyattsville's 10 city council seats, one from each ward, will be up for election on May 7. As well, a special election to fill the vacancy left by the recently resigned Councilor Nicole Hinds Mofor (Ward 5) will also be held, with the vacant seat going to the runner up in the regularly scheduled Ward 5 council race.
