Prince George's Ups Incentives for Women-Owned Businesses

"Women-owned businesses are some of the fastest growing, most innovative and creative companies in this region," Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker says.

Prince George's County is hoping to attract more women-owned businesses.

The county has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Women President's Education Organization (WPEO-DC), giving certified women business enterprises more opportunity to do business with the county.

The county currently accepts certifications from the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), and this MOU makes woman-owned companies that are WBENC-certified also qualified for county Minority Business Enterprise certification.

"Women-owned businesses are some of the fastest growing, most innovative and creative companies in this region," Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker said. "I believe this MOU will encourage more women-owned businesses to conduct business in Prince George’s County.”

For businesses that apply for county Minority Business Enterprise certifications and have their Women's Business Enterprise status confirmed, the county will register them as county-certified MBEs, and the WBE will be registered in the county's procurement database.

“Today, there are great economic opportunities taking place in Prince George’s County. This agreement is an economic development bridge for women-owned businesses to do business with the county,” said Roland L. Jones, executive director, Minority Business Development Division.

Maybe the county should offer incentives for all business rather than creating invidious and unconstitutional policies favoring one group at the expense of others.
