Proposal Keeps City Property Tax Rate Same

Real property tax rate has remained unchanged since 2005.

Hyattsville Mayor Marc Tartaro has introduced a resolution which would keep the same municipal real property tax rate which the city has had for the last several years.

Tonight, the Hyattsville City Council will consider Tartaro's property tax measure, which sets the city's real property tax rate at 63 cents per $100 of assessed property value.

The last time the city of Hyattsville raised its real property tax rate was in 2005 under former Mayor Bill Gardiner. Previously, the city's real property tax rate stood at 58 cents per $100 of assessed property value.

At 63 cents, Hyattsville's real property tax rate is the 12th highest among Prince George's County municipalities and special tax districts. Colmar Manor has the highest real property tax rate, at $1.49 cents per $100 of assessed property value. Upper Marlboro has the lowest real property tax rate, at 24 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The average real property tax rate among Prince George's County municipalities and special tax districts is 61 cents per $100 of assessed property value.

In recent weeks, as the Hyattsville City Council considers revising the post employment health care benefit scheme available to city employees, some city workers have pressed the city council to raise tax revenues to fund more comprehensive retirment health care options.

However, Tartaro has stated his opposition to raising the real property tax rates, even as the city is facing a 10 percent reduction in property tax revenues as a result of a lower tax assessment.

The city council will be holding a public hearing tonight at 7:30 p.m. to gather resident input over the proposed real property tax rate for fiscal year 2014.

Immediately after the public hearing, the city council will convene for its regular meeting at 8 p.m. The only item on the meeting agenda is the tax rate measure. Both meetings are in the city council chambers at the Hyattsville Municipal Building on Gallatin Street.

Those unable to make the public hearing, but interested in registering their thoughts with city officials, may direct comments over email to public_hearing@hyattsville.org.
