Update: Residents Hear Gunshots, Police Stumped

A number of residents have taken to the Internet describing what they say were the sound of multiple gunshots in a downtown Hyattsville residential neighborhood over the weekend. 

According to accounts posted to the Hyattsville Organization for a Positive Environment Listserv, multiple gunshots reportedly rang out shortly after 4 a.m. on April 22 in the vicinity of 40th Avenue, somewhere between Nicholson and Longfellow streets. One resident reported hearing tires squealing away from the location shortly after the incident. 

Multiple residents reported the incident to the police, according to the accounts. 

Requests for more information about the the reports have been placed with the Hyattsville City Police Department's public information officer, as well as the Prince George's County Police Department's Public Information Office. At the time of this writing, they have not yet been returned.

Update: April 23, 2012, 10:15 a.m. - Hyattsville City Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Chris Purvis confirmed that multiple residents called in early Sunday morning concerned over the sound of gunshots in the area. However, police dispatched to the scene could find no evidence of a gunfight. 

"Our guys went out there and they didn't find a thing," said Purvis in an interview. "Sometimes it could be fireworks or something else."

Purvis encouraged residents to alert police whenever they hear something suspicious, and praised those who called in the reported gunshots on Sunday morning. 

"Just call and we'll get down there and try to figure it out," said Purvis. 

Update: April 23, 2012, 3:30 p.m. - One note to add to the story. The Prince George's County Police Media Relations Division did end up getting back to me.

"There was no mention of this incident by our communications or the PIO that was covering the shift during this time frame," wrote Cpl. Larry Johnson. "A call for the 'sound of shots' isn't usually reported to our office unless a person was injured as a result."
