DeMatha Upsets Baltimore Powerhouse in Shadow of Scandal

On a tough day for Stags, Stags get tough on Calvert Hall.

Less than 24 hours becoming the center of a prep-school prostitution scandal, the DeMatha Catholic High School football team held off a late rally to defeat Calvert Hall High School 23-14 before a small but friendly crowd at Naval Academy Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. 

Throughout the day, the team endured something of a local media frenzy to cover the news that (a Morrisville, NC Holiday Inn near the Raleigh Durham Airport) following their season opening victory on the road against Durham-based Hillcrest High School. 

The scandal overshadowed what would otherwise be news of a surprising upset over Calvert Hall, ranked 3rd in the state according to Maxpreps and second in the Baltimore region according toThe Baltimore Sun. DeMatha, ranked 5th statewide by Maxpreps and 7th in the DC area according to The Washington Post, built up a 20 point lead by the middle of the third quarter with two red-zone touchdown passes by junior quarterback John Lovett and another red zone rushing touchdown from Sophopmore Taiwan Deal.

Calvert Hall mounted something of a comeback in the late 3rd quarter and 4th quarter, scoring two touchdowns to close the gap to 20-14 with 9 minutes left in the fourth quarter. 

But DeMatha held on for the victory, sealing the win with a 15 yard field goal with 2 minutes left to make the final score 23-14. 

According to The Washington Post, the prostitution incident has high school football coaches across the region re-examining their chaperoning procedures used on long distance trips.

DeMatha's next faces Loyola Blakefield at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 at the Prince George's Count Sports and Learning Complex.

The vicotry should be taken away based upon the conduct of players that should be banned from all sports.
