With respect to the old school at 38th Ave. and Longfellow St. (that dated back to the 1940s), back around 1981, I and two friends, using our White's metal detectors, found more than 1400 coins (mostly in the grassed play ground area) around the school grounds. Well over 100 coins were silver. I surmise most of the coins was lunch money lost by students for more than 35 years, at that time. My friend found a pristine DeMatha High School ring from the class of 1965 -- and located the original owner via the DeMatha school library, based on the initials inscribed on the inside of the ring (the ring owner lost the ring in the early summer of '65, when it flew off his finger while throwing a football.) My friend also found a brass, 1/2 dollar-sized spinner token (coin) from the 1939 world's fair in New York City. A token like this would be a typical item some kld would bring to school to show his/her friends.
