Hyattsville Middle Whizzes Past MLK Middle In Science Bowl

This is the school's sixth Science Bowl top win.

This is Hyattsville Middle’s the sixth Science Bowl trophy and the third in the past four years.

In the Science Bowl's 25-year history, only Kenmoor Middle School has won more championships with seven top honors.

The HMS team— Mahalia Lotz, Shawn Meepagala, and Billy Kennedy III—won on March 25 by knowing that radioactivity is measured in picocuries and that “The Beak of the Finch” is a book about evolution.

Prince George’s County School Board Members Donna Hathaway Beck (Dist. 9) and Amber Waller (Dist. 3) were amongst the vast crowd at Bonnie F. Johns Media Center in Landover for the Middle School Science Bowl finale.

In the first semifinal match that day, Martin L. King, Jr. Middle nudged out Thomas Pullen Middle 275-190, while in the second game, Hyattsville Middle won over John Hanson French Immersion/Montessori 285-170. 

In the championship game, HMS came from behind and went on to beat Martin L. King, Jr. 290-130.  presented plaques and science field guides to the HMS winners.

Hyattsville's team also includes two alternates—Brittany Schultz and Megan Dominey, and team sponsor, teacher Mona Hafez.
