Keeping Things Social

The Hyattsville Elementary School PTSA held an ice cream social Wednesday evening.

Here are some snapshots of the HES PTSA ice cream social.

During the event, HES Reading Specialist Stephanie Chapman showed parents some of the books she bought with a $5,000 grant. In May, HES was chosen as one of the schools to benefit from the Strokes for Hope golf tournament, which was sponsored by Post HOPE, the corporate giving arm of Post Properties, and coordinated with Literacy for a Lifetime.

Chapman said she bought nine copies of various fiction and non-fiction books as resources for individual classrooms. Many of the books, which are hard cover, will help with the school's science and social studies curriculum, she said.

"... Our kids can enjoy these books for many, many years to come," Chapman said.

Former Washington Redskins player Roy Jefferson was scheduled to present the books, but at the last minute he was unable to attend, said PTSA secretary T. Carter Ross.
