Molly Barker established Girls on the Run in Charlotte in 1996. The Girls on the Run curricula, the heart of the program, provides adolescent girls with the necessary tools to embrace their individual strengths as they enter middle and high school, Jones said.

Today, there are Girls on the Run programs in over 150 cities across North America, with tens of thousands of girls and women participating, the program’s website states.

“We a completed a ‘leadership/community service project’ consisting of making signs and decorations for the school dance being held next week,” Jones said.

“The girls have commented on [how] they enjoy getting to know students from the different grade levels and have expressed how surprised they are at how long they can now run!”

The race is even spurring on adults to work out with the pupils.

“Many teachers have been coming out to run with the girls and have even taught some of the lessons,” Jones said. “The girls really enjoy getting to know some of their teachers at a different level and meeting some other teachers they may not have during he day.”
