Northwestern Choir Honors Mandela With Song

Choir pays vigil outside of the Pretoria hospital where Nelson Mandela is being treated.

Earlier this week, members of the Northwestern High School Choir took to the skies to begin their musical tour of South Africa, and they're already making international headlines. 

One of their first stops was to Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria, the hospital where the ailing Nelson Mandela is being treated. According to iOL Newsthe choir sang praise songs and hymns, as well as the South African national anthem, outside of the hospital. 

“We look up to him as a person and it means a lot being here. We hope he gets better soon and is able to celebrate his birthday with family,” Victoria Okater, a student with the Northwestern choir, told iOL News.

The choir is in South Africa to participate in the Ilhombe Music Festival. As readers may remember, the choir faced significant difficulties raising the money necessary to make the trip.
