For the first time in two years, the clatter of children will once again return to the campus at in northern Hyattsville.
Located near the intersection of Adelphi Road and University Boulevard, the campus was closed in June 2010 when St. Mark's Elementary School merged with St. Camillus Elementary School to form the St. Francis International School in Silver Spring.
According to an announcement from Tobias Harkleroad, principal of St. Francis International School, the Hyattsville campus will host a number of summer enrichment programs starting this June.
"As Saint Francis International School continues to grow over the coming years the school administration looks forward to more ways to better utilize the St. Mark Campus for early children, elementary, and middle school students," according to a press release issued by Harkleroad.
The camp season at St. Mark's begins on June 11 with the start of the St. Francis Lions Basketball Camp. On June 25, the campus will begin to host the St. Francis Summer Academy, offering tutoring and enrichment classes. That week also marks the start of a Camp Fire USA Camp WoHeLo.
Harkleroad estimates that the Hyattsville campus will host "well over a hundred" students over the summer months.
The Silver Spring campus is also undergoing renovations to expand the school, including kitchen and classroom upgrades. According to Harkleroad, the school kitchen serves more than 600 meals per day.
The news comes , which at one time ran two campuses in Hyattsville serving as many as 200 students. According to one school official, said that enrollment had dropped to about 75 students this year and that it was not "financially feasible to run the school for another year."
