Saturday morning group bike rides

For July (and June 30), we're going to try a new ride schedule -- Saturdays from 8am to 10am. We'll do rides of approximately 20 miles in the early morning to beat the summer heat. All rides will be at a social/relaxed pace and no one will be dropped or left behind.

We'll meet at Proteus bike shop and decide the routes each week based on the weather and what people want to ride. Typical routes will be in the Beltsville farms, the Anacostia Tributary trails, or Greenbelt National Park. We may go out for breakfast some weeks if the mood strikes.

Greenbelt riders wishing to ride over to the start can meet us at the New Deal Cafe at 7:30am.

Here is a typical route we've used in the past (nice and shady, at least for some sections): http://ridewithgps.com/routes/896301. Here is a video that shows a typical ride tempo and scenery:https://vimeo.com/41262724

Saturday shop ride route update. This Saturday the 14th, I'd like to propose a more relaxed trail ride to start out. We'll start at 8am at the shop, and head down the Anacostia Tributary trails to the Bladensburg marina. We'll go past the lake Artemesia parking lot at about 8:30 and the Wells Ice Rink side parking lot at about 8:40 if people want to join up there. We'll get back to the shop about 10am probably. This will be a great warm up for riders looking for a flat route at a gentle pace to stretch their legs. Then, at 10am, we're going to head out to the Beltsville farms to do some speed work (Laurie's training for her first tri!). This follow-on ride would be best for those who want a faster workout for a bit. So all are welcome to join us for a casual warm-up ride down to Bladensburg on the trails at 8am, and those who want a faster workout can join the paceline out to Beltsville at 10am!

For tomorrow's (July 28th) 8am ride, we're planning to take the trails through Lake Artemesia to the Bladensburg Marina, and then hit the new bakery in Hyattsville that opened up where Rhode Island Reds used to be. We stopped in last week (in the rain), and I can attest that the apple turnovers are outstanding. For the 10am ride, I figured we'd just do a medium paced social ride out in the Beltsville farms, and if anybody wants to hit the gas, we could do a fast lap at the wildlife refuge. -Jeff http://www.pgparks.com/Things_To_Do/Nature/Bladensburg_Waterfront_Park.htm http://shortcakebakery.com/ http://hyattsville.patch.com/articles/hlt-new-bakery-coming-to-hyattsville
