Update: TwoCooling Centers Remain Open in Pr. George's

Update, July 5:

According to WTOP, many of the county's cooling centers have now closed, as power has been restored to many residents.

• New Carrollton Nutrition Center, open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Camp Springs Senior Center, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Update, July 4: The following cooling centers will remain open on the Fourth of July.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, the shelter at Northwestern High School and the Kentland cooling center will be closed, because residents using the centers found alternate housing or their power was restored.

Original Post, July 3: Emergency officials in Prince George's County will continue to operate cooling centers through Tuesday. The above map shows all cooling stations in service as of July 3. 

County officials are continuing to keep open as a 24-hour shelter for residents who remain displaced as a result of storm damage.

Power outages continue to linger for many county residents three days after a massive derecho swept from Indianna to Maryland, leaving millions without power across much of the Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley regions. Locally, as of 11 p.m. Monday, more than 59,000 Pepco and Baltimore Gas and Electric customers were without power in Prince George's County, according to data posted to power company websites. 

County fire officials are urging residents to use flashlights instead of candles to light their homes, and to follow safety procedures when running combustion generators. 

"A couple of post-storm fires that occurred were the result of residents using candles for light," according to a press release from county press secretary Scott Peterson. "Additionally, we have had close calls of lethal levels of carbon monoxide due to misuse of generators. We encourage all residents to use generators properly."
