The City of Hyattsville was founded in 1860 and named after Christopher Clarke Hyatt, an early area settler. The city has a mayor and 10 ward representatives, two from each of the five wards. Hyattsville's Municipal building--which now includes the city's police department--was located on Jefferson Street until relocating to its current building on Gallatin Street.
