I'm also bemused by the comment about this place being dirty; I've eaten there (or gotten carryout) several times, and have never seen it dirty. Anyhow, on to the food; I LOVE the beef tibs, which are nice and spicy. Also the sambusas, which are patties filled with either beef, chicken, or lentils. I usually order a half dozen when I get carryout, but about half of them never make it home, as I munch on the way! If you're like me and don't drink coffee, they make a nice cup if chai tea. The staff is very efficient and friendly. Whether you want to visit for a coffee or another drink or order a meal, this is a GREAT place.

This Ethiopian full-service coffee shop/restaurant and bar is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have a laid-back atmosphere with African decorations. The owner is lively and very helpful. She says that there will be new renovations to the interior and exterior soon. There is also free wi-fi available to patrons.

The comment about the place being dirty and the food not being tasty is just baffling (I am also curious why, if it's so terrible, the critical reviewer keeps going back, as implied by the phrase "I have had to return so many dirty plates...", which suggests more than a single visit).
I have eaten here many, many times and the food has ranged from merely excellent to amazing, as has the service (including cleanliness!). The food is as good or better than at ANY of the many Ethiopian restaurants I have tried in Adams Morgan or on U Street, although the menu may be more limited than at some places and the decor is less fancy (although they keep upgrading). So I would give it 5 stars regardless of location--but given the generally gastronomically bleak area (College Park/Hyattsville/etc.) it deserves more stars!

This place is absolutely dirty. The food is not tasty either. I have had to to return so many dirty plates, cups, and unclean table cloth.
Compared some of the downtown Ethiopian places I would mark this with 4 stars. However, because I'm reviewing an Ethiopian restaurant in Hyattsville of all places I will have to mark it up to 5 stars! Vegetarian food is hard to come by outside of the city. I'm happy to live just a few blocks away. My wife and I call-in and carry out so we can't speak to dine in service. Always great food and a smile with the service. We can only speak to the vegetarian options.
Back when I first moved to Hyattsville, I lived on Oliver Street just five houses up from the Dunkin Donuts. This DD after a few years (mid 90's) changed to "Donut Connection". This is where Shagga is now. I've eaten there many times (vegetarian) and just love the fact that I can get Ethiopian a mile from my house! The food great, the service is excellent, it's in the City of Hyattsville. Three great things! They also have sell beer which is nice to wash down some of the spicier dishes. I have not sat through the Coffee service but my understanding is that it last a couple hours and is well worth it.

Great veggie dish for 2!
