Court Orders Recognition Of Out-Of-State Gay Marriages

Ruling stems from divorce case filed by a couple married in California in 2008.

Same-sex marriages legally performed out of state must be recognized by Maryland Courts, according to a decision issued Friday by Maryland’s highest court. “Maryland courts will withhold recognition of a valid foreign marriage only if that marriage is ‘repugnant’ to State public policy,” wrote Court of Appeals Judge Glenn Harrell Jr. in the 7-0 decision. The case stems from a 2010 divorce case filed in Prince Georges County. Two women, Jessica Port and Virginia Cowan, were legally married in October 2008 in California. Eight months later, the couple separated and ultimately filed for divorce in July 2010. The judge in that case ruled that recognizing “the alleged marriage would be contrary to the public policy of Maryland” and declared it …

Hyattsville Crime Map: Taxi Cab Carjacked

Vehicle-related crimes plague city in second week of May.

The week of May 6 was not a good week to be a car owner in Hyattsville. According to data released by the Hyattsville City Police Department, that week saw four vehicles stolen and one taxi cab carjacked.  First, the carjacking. Police say that on May 9, at around 9 p.m., a taxi cab was stolen after the driver dropped off two fares in the 5700 block of 43rd Avenue in downtown Hyattsville. Upon reaching the destination, one of the fares brandished a handgun. The taxi driver surrendered his cab and watched as the two suspects fled toward Queensbury Road.  Hyattsville police did not provide a description of the suspects.  There were also four vehicle thefts. Police Searching for Missing Upper Marlboro Woman

Erica Antonette Jackson, 39, was last seen by her husband in Upper Marlboro on Wednesday morning.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is searching for a missing Upper Marlboro woman. Erica Antonette Jackson, 39, was last seen by her husband leaving their home in the 12400 block of Open View Lane, Upper Marlboro on Wednesday morning to go to work.  Jackson may be suffering from depression and could be a danger to herself.  She has not been seen since. Police Search for Missing Bladensburg Man

Jimmy Richardson, 71, suffers from dementia. He was last seen Wednesday evening.

The Prince George's County Police Department is searching for a missing Bladensburg man who suffers from dementia. Seventy-one-year-old Jimmy Richardson, who is not on medication for his condition, was last seen by his neighbor at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at his residence at the 4900 block of 56th Ave. in the unincorporated section of Bladensburg. Police believe Richardson walked away from the residence, and he has not been seen or heard from since. Police provide the following description for Richardson: Anyone with information about Richardson is asked to call the Prince George's County Police Department’s District I Investigative Section at 301-699-2601. Legislature Approves Tax Hike, Pension Shift

Governor calls budget package "good for all Marylanders." Republicans say burden to local governments may force county governments to increase taxes.

The Maryland House of Delegates gave final approval Wednesday to a package of three bills that increases taxes on some state residents, shifts part of teacher pensions to local governments and undoes the so-called "doomsday budget." The votes Wednesday afternoon capped the three-day special session called by Gov. Martin O'Malley in order to override more than $500 million in cuts made in a budget passed in early April. The Senate approved the same three bills Tuesday. As part of the package, legislators approved by a vote of 86-51 what amounts to a 50-50 split of teacher pension costs with local governments. The split will be phased in over the next four years beginning July 1 with the new budget year. That bill also includes a doubling of…
