Renderings of the proposed Cafritz development in Riverdale Park.
Mr. Lobb June 18, 2013 at 06:04 am
What is the basis of the appeal? What is the effect on the proposed development? Will this delayRead More ultimately lead to this project getting scuttled?
Michael L. Albertson June 18, 2013 at 04:52 pm
Why is the City covering the cost of the appraisal for the Riverdale Presbyterian Church on QueenRead More Chapel road? Is it for sale?
HyattsvilleCouldBeBetter May 30, 2013 at 08:25 pm
BigDan, most of the people in the DC/Baltimore region have no idea where Hyattsville is and whenRead More they find out its in Prince George's County they automatically assume the worst which usually stems from their own racism.
Michael Theis (Editor) May 30, 2013 at 08:52 pm
Unfortunately, BigDan's characterization of the racial makeup of the city's neighborhoods isRead More misleading, to put it lightly. There is actual recent data on race and wards in the city which we can be informative here. Per the last redistricting: Ward 1 - 35.5 percent African-American, 33 percent White, 24 percent Hispanic, 4.2 percent Asian. Ward 2 - 38 percent White, 29 percent African-American, 26 percent Hispanic, 3.6 percent Asian. Ward 3 - 34 percent African-American, 29 percent White, 25 percent Hispanic, and 8.4 percent Asian. Ward 4 - 50 percent Hispanic, 33 percent African American, 9.7 percent White and 4.4 percent Asian. Ward 5 - 44 percent Hispanic, 42 percent African American, 8.5 percent White and 3.2 percent Asian. As you can see, Ward 4 in West Hyattsville has the highest concentration of hispanics. This, you may remember, was by design, as the city council desired to create a "majority-minority" ward out of Ward 4. There is an obvious clustering of minority populations in the south and west of the city, but I would venture that this is not a result of some imagined municipal apartheid regime, but rather a result of the location of most of the city's affordable housing and apartment stock.

BigDan, the "black" Giant (as you so eloquently called it) was NOT located in Hyattsville,Read More but rather the unincorporated area known as Queenstown. So exactly how has the city had an effect on that? You also complain about the "arts crap" on East-West Highway. I travel that road all the time, and I have no idea what you are talking about. There is a "so-called" Arts District on Route 1 near Jefferson Street, but I know of no such designated area on Route 410. BigDan do you even know where Hyattsville (proper) is? Keep in mind that many areas around Prince George's County label themselves as "Hyattsville," but are not within the incorporated city limits, which means the Hyattsville government has no control over them.

(The [former] house is actually on Farragut Street)
Michael Theis (Editor) April 12, 2013 at 04:11 pm
Whoops. Fixed, Thanks!
HHill April 2, 2013 at 03:51 am
Hhmmmm........... I wonder if there was equivalent consideration and hand wringing overRead More the nearly instantaneous chock-a-block development, and how it "impacted" Hyattsville's Rte 1 corridor ?
TheresaR April 2, 2013 at 05:08 am
hey does anyone know how to join the hyattsville comumity list serve, we have had a couple ofRead More robberies and I want to compare notes. thanks ! theresa
Shani April 2, 2013 at 06:25 pm
TheresaR, Here's the link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HOPE_in_Hyattsville/. If links aren'tRead More allowed in the comments (prudent policy to cut down on spam), Google "hope Hyattsville" and it's the first result.
Christine May 17, 2013 at 08:09 pm
Finally, someone with something constructive to say. Would it work? Who knows? But even if itRead More failed, it could make some of these legislators sit up and take notice of their opposition.
Christine May 17, 2013 at 08:11 pm
This is very true. And it will hit many of us consumers twice: we'l have to pay the extra moneyRead More out of empty pockets AND we'll have to absorb price increases on our goods because the vendor's costs increase. Wht exactly was the goal of this tax increase?
Christine May 17, 2013 at 08:15 pm
I'm sorry, but I could hardly read your comment. Did you forget all your punctuation? It does notRead More support your point of view when you don't even use simple sentences. It makes you sound like you can't write correctly and therefore may not be that bright, regardless of whether you an Einstein or developmentally disabled.
sara prigan March 17, 2013 at 12:16 pm
rumor has it that a new location of midatlantic seafood will come.Read More http://www.midatlantictakomapark.com/
Danny March 18, 2013 at 02:12 pm
did you really not see this explicitly mentioned in the very article on which you're commenting?
Misa March 20, 2013 at 01:37 pm
I wonder what's going to take the place of the old jewelry store. They could combine the Giant spaceRead More with the jewlery store space to make a larger grocery store. I just hope it's not a Best Way or an international grocery store. Nothing against them but I want a store that has something for everyone. Actually now that I think of it I need to stick to Giant because I love the gas rewards! :-)
HyattsvilleCouldBeBetter March 8, 2013 at 10:30 pm
I'm referring to the whole stretch when traveling between downtown DC and Hyattsville. I mostly useRead More Michigan/Queens chapel which has poorly timed lights of it's own. Especially once you get into DC.
HyattsvilleCouldBeBetter March 8, 2013 at 10:35 pm
If they would turn the lights into blinking yellow lights late at night it would save me a ton ofRead More time.
Michael Theis (Editor) March 9, 2013 at 04:41 am
I use Queens Chapel/Michigan when I'm headed to upper NW, like Columbia Heights, but if I am headedRead More downtown by car, I usually take Rhode Island Avenue to North Capitol Street. The lights have never really been a problem for me.
HyattsvilleCouldBeBetter March 8, 2013 at 07:45 pm
I love the farmers market. Great crowd. If there was a cool coffee shop there I would go.
Khoirboy1911 April 4, 2013 at 07:13 pm
I grew up in the Avondale neighborhood of West Hyattsville in the 80s/90s, Russell Ave to be exact.Read More I left MD for college in 1999 & haven't lived in the area since. When I go back home to visit, I see the deterioration of the QC Giant. However, there used to be alot of citizens who were adults in my adolescence from the NE DC neighborhoods right across Eastern Ave (North Michigan Park, Woodridge, Ft Lincoln, etc.) that used that location b/c of the convenience & a preference of Giant to Safeway. I feel sorry for them as they're elderly now & are forced to visit the PG Plaza or Rhode Island Ave locations to perpetuate their preferences. At one time, the wooded area extending from the backyards of the Russell Ave single family homes to the Giant (or maybe it was just to the Avondale Park Apts) was identified as a potential location for new townhouse developments. This was in the late 90s/early 2000s. For those of you that still live in Hyattsville, obviously that never happened. However, w/ the QC Shopping Center now slated for redevelopment, I wonder if that plan is going to resurface.
FancyFreedc April 22, 2013 at 02:57 pm
I'm sad to see it go because it was so much a part of my life. This was my dad's favorite stopRead More every day. All the clerks knew him and he was an expected part of the day for a few minutes every day. It was also like a weekly home coming on Friday evenings and most weekends. I always saw my McKinley Tech former classmates shopping to prepare for the weekend. It was a pleasure to see so many familiar faces in the neighborhood. I am really sorry to see it go.
dogmama April 22, 2013 at 03:26 pm
Other than miscellaneous things at Glut and Bestway, I haven't been to the grocery store in almost aRead More month. Going to PG Plaza with the lights and traffic feels like an expedition, as does Riggs Plaza. This was the first time in years that I needed gas and didn't have Giant points to take money off at Shell!
Jennifer Murphy March 6, 2013 at 12:50 pm
No. The area is already pedestrian unfriendly enough. We don't need another unhealthy fast food withRead More unhealthy discrimination practices. Chick Fill-a = Obesity, litter and discrimination. Please say no.
Mark G March 6, 2013 at 03:12 pm
Thanks for mentioning littler, Jennifer Murphy. I would like to see the fast food restaurants heldRead More responsible for the TONS of litter that eminate from their establishments. I'd also like to see the indivual litterers fined but that type of law enforcement seems to be a low priority. The plastic bag laws have helped in places where enacted. We need something directed at fast food litter,
Danny March 6, 2013 at 08:21 pm
Actually, there is a BB&T with drive-thru immediately next door to the Chick-fil-a site; itRead More opened less than 5 years ago. Not even to mention the SunTrust and Capitol One drive-thrus in the mall parking lot. And what about the CVS drive-thru across the street? Also, as of today, there are no vacancies inside the mall food court. Famous Dave's, a sit-down restaurant, previously planned to build on this same site but pulled out after being approved by the County.
Scot Brown February 4, 2013 at 03:09 pm
Love it! I wish they would connect Editor's Park Drive to 33ave in the neighborhood behind so itRead More would be faster and easy to get to Giant and the shops
HyattsvilleCouldBeBetter February 4, 2013 at 07:27 pm
I don't think the local neighborhoods would want the increased traffic but it would reduce theRead More number of people making left turns at Queens Chapel onto Belcrest.
Effie Kalapothakos February 21, 2013 at 04:14 am
Will this be another empty storefront space location, like what we have at the University TownRead More Center? Shouldn't the council get more involved in making properties that are around right now more attractive to retailers, grocers, etc.?
Michael B. Cron February 1, 2013 at 12:33 pm
Thank you Mr. Ebbeler! University Park will also continue and with greater resolve to keep an evenRead More stronger vigilance regarding all phases of development of the Cafritz property as well. When all of the dust clears and this development is a reality I can safely say that all affected nearby towns and other stake holders will have made sure that this development will be the best it can be!
Jenni Pompi (Editor) February 1, 2013 at 03:21 pm
How do you feel about developer's intention to refile?
Michael B. Cron February 1, 2013 at 06:37 pm
I have no problem with them refiling as long as they have proof of satisfying all of the covenantsRead More and conditions required so that the process goes smoothly. Unless something drastically changes regarding an agreement with Applied Physics or an alternate landing site is secured, it will be a waste of time to refile. No bridge no development.
Mike Derry February 5, 2013 at 03:49 pm
continued- I work at a 160 year old historic hospital in Towson... several years ago we sold landRead More to Towson university. for apartments .. as part of the deal however we had say into the architectual design of the buildings... They wanted them to blend/match the design of the Hosp....they also wanted to make sure certain structures and tracks of land were preserved... as well as preserving mature trees and requiring new plantings... Same with Towson Place (the old eudowood shopping center) next to the 60 years old Brick townhome neighborhood of Loch Raven Village... as part of the re-development the neighborhood association required that developers try to match the feel of the neighborhood... even down to determining the color and style of brick that was used... I remember months of negotiation before the Neighborhood association would sign off on the reconstruction...That is a community having direct involvement over what kind of development is in their area... It would be nice to see that level of involvement and oversite...

I love the parking on Rt. 1. Saturday evening I parked right in front of elevation burger got aRead More meal and was home in 3 mins. I like to walk when it’s not cold. I don't see the problem. There has always been a plan for the city to build a parking garage in the area and now that the development is taking off they are working on it. I just don't see why the development is bad. I love it and would not have bought a home and spent $50,000+ in renovation if it was not being built. I would have bought in MoCo. I can spend my paycheck anywhere and took a risk in PG County. Gas Tax=Purple Line=better public transportation. Rt 1 and 410 are congested because there are no other thru streets. They must be used to get anywhere. RI Ave needs a straight shot to Beltsville (never going to happen). UMD needs a link to 495 and 95N via the truck weigh station (never going to happen). Riverdale Park needs more ways to cross the CSX track and needs to bury the tracks straight thru town to make a more livable community (never going to happen). Hyattsville needs to connect Queens Chapel and Rt1 somewhere other than 410. When that was suggested with one ways on Queens burry and Ogelthorpe the community about peed themselves. Community involvement is good and needed as is good leadership. I think the community is involved in the Whole Foods development. I mean look they just go the project shut down and back to the drawing board.
Mike Derry February 5, 2013 at 06:09 pm
Scott, The route 1 parking is certainly convenient... if you are parking !!! but if you areRead More driving down route 1 or trying to turn left or right at Jefferson it is a nightmare... it is the worst place to lose two lanes.(one in each direction ) .. Jefferson is a highly used cut through road... The traffic lights are short as it is... and the left turn lane into the shopping area (at Jefferson ) is pretty short as well and backs into the left lane of route 1..... what you get is a bottle neck of traffic coming up to that intersection... beside the bottleneck I'm fearful some poor soul who has parked on route 1 is going to have their car run into... or worse yet be hit by a car... i've already seen some near misses as cars do not realize the diving lane ended and jammed on their brakes and swerved....If I remember corrctly there is no on street parking north of that area all the way up to the beltway... it is two driving lanes each way...cars are not anticipating those lanes ending... I'd certainly never park along there
