Three companies submitted their bids Friday.
The Prince George's County commission tasked to determine which location would be best for a new casino will have to weigh three options after three companies placed bids for three different locations. County Executive Rushern L. Baker III recently told a Washington Business Journal reporter that he preferred MGM's plan at The National Harbor located in Oxon Hill on the Potomac. However, two other bidders—Greenwood Racing, Inc. and Penn National—have also pitched two other locations. Penn National would want their casino as the Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, while Greenwood Racing, Inc. picked an abandoned lot in Fort Washington. So what do you think? Bills in the House of Delegates and Senate would create a new standard where all dog owners are presumed liable for dog attacks, regardless of the breed of the animal.
Legislation overriding a Maryland Court of Appeals ruling that made landlords liable for pit bull attacks, and put owners at risk of being evicted or having to give up their dogs, will be heard Wednesday by the House Judiciary Committee. Identical House and Senate bills seek to create a new standard where all dog owners in civil action cases, regardless of the dog’s breed, are presumed liable for attacks unless owners can prove they did everything possible to avoid the attack, said Sen. Brian Frosh, sponsor of the Senate bill. After the Newtown, CT school shooting, Maryland legislators are looking at a number of ways to make schools safer.
According to Annapolis Patch, delegates from Anne Arundel County are introducing legislation on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in hopes of increasing security and mental health services at public schools across the state. The proposed bill would also pay for an armed resource officer at each school. "If you really understand public schools in Maryland, you know this: They are becoming increasingly more difficult for classroom teachers because discipline is lacking at home and teachers are spending an increasing amount of time maintaining discipline in the classroom," said Del. For the upcoming presidential inauguration, a number of additional pieces of equipment are being installed in and around the National Mall to handle the expected increase in wireless traffic from advanced smartphones and tablets. Last month's Washington Post editorial criticizing the Prince George's County Police Department for its handling of a 2010 student beating case was "exaggerated and misleading," Police Chief Mark Magaw wrote in a letter published Sunday. Magaw's submission came in response to a Dec. 28 piece ("Prince George’s police get away with a beating") in which the editorial board condemned two officers caught on tape hitting University of Maryland student John J. McKenna in College Park. The incident occurred during the unruly aftermath of a victory over Duke by the UMD men's basketball team.
