Hyattsville Crime Map: Taxi Cab Carjacked

Vehicle-related crimes plague city in second week of May.

The week of May 6 was not a good week to be a car owner in Hyattsville. According to data released by the Hyattsville City Police Department, that week saw four vehicles stolen and one taxi cab carjacked.  First, the carjacking. Police say that on May 9, at around 9 p.m., a taxi cab was stolen after the driver dropped off two fares in the 5700 block of 43rd Avenue in downtown Hyattsville. Upon reaching the destination, one of the fares brandished a handgun. The taxi driver surrendered his cab and watched as the two suspects fled toward Queensbury Road.  Hyattsville police did not provide a description of the suspects.  There were also four vehicle thefts. Police Searching for Missing Upper Marlboro Woman

Erica Antonette Jackson, 39, was last seen by her husband in Upper Marlboro on Wednesday morning.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is searching for a missing Upper Marlboro woman. Erica Antonette Jackson, 39, was last seen by her husband leaving their home in the 12400 block of Open View Lane, Upper Marlboro on Wednesday morning to go to work.  Jackson may be suffering from depression and could be a danger to herself.  She has not been seen since. Police Search for Missing Bladensburg Man

Jimmy Richardson, 71, suffers from dementia. He was last seen Wednesday evening.

The Prince George's County Police Department is searching for a missing Bladensburg man who suffers from dementia. Seventy-one-year-old Jimmy Richardson, who is not on medication for his condition, was last seen by his neighbor at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at his residence at the 4900 block of 56th Ave. in the unincorporated section of Bladensburg. Police believe Richardson walked away from the residence, and he has not been seen or heard from since. Police provide the following description for Richardson: Anyone with information about Richardson is asked to call the Prince George's County Police Department’s District I Investigative Section at 301-699-2601. Legislature Approves Tax Hike, Pension Shift

Governor calls budget package "good for all Marylanders." Republicans say burden to local governments may force county governments to increase taxes.

The Maryland House of Delegates gave final approval Wednesday to a package of three bills that increases taxes on some state residents, shifts part of teacher pensions to local governments and undoes the so-called "doomsday budget." The votes Wednesday afternoon capped the three-day special session called by Gov. Martin O'Malley in order to override more than $500 million in cuts made in a budget passed in early April. The Senate approved the same three bills Tuesday. As part of the package, legislators approved by a vote of 86-51 what amounts to a 50-50 split of teacher pension costs with local governments. CK One and Done: PG Police Sniff Out Perfume Theft Ring For two District of Columbia women, their scented trail of theft has finally been sniffed out by the Prince George's County Police Department (PGPD), with groundwork laid by the Glenarden Police Department. The PGPD arrested 19-year old Darquesha Shelby Wilkinson and 23-year old Latasha Renee Mungo for their involvement in an organized theft ring where thousands of dollars worth of stolen assorted perfumes were recovered, according to police. Loss prevention officers at JC Penney spotted Wilkinson and Mungo stealing assorted perfumes on on May 8, in the store on the 9000 block of McHugh Drive in Glenarden, according to police. They left the store, however, without being detained. …

Police Operation Results In 305 Arrests

Joint operation in Prince George's County closes 330 warrants.

A joint warrant operation conducted April 16-27 in Prince George’s County resulted in 305 arrests and the closing of 330 open warrant cases, according to a press release from the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office. Several suspects who were brought into custody had multiple warrants, resulting in the higher number of warrants closed. Seven law enforcement organizations worked together to serve the warrants, including the Department of Corrections, the Maryland State Police (Forestville Barrack), the Greenbelt Police Department, Seat Pleasant Police Department, the Prince George’s County Police District IV, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the release.  “This has to be one of the best …

Late Night Gunshots Unnerve Residents

Hyattsville police are investigating a series of incidents in which gunshots rang out in the late night and early morning hours in central Hyattsville.

The Hyattsville City Police Department is investigating a series of incidents dating back to April 8 in which gunshots rang out in the late night and early morning hours in central Hyattsville.  The latest incident occurred around 2:25 a.m. on May 12.  During that incident Councilor Shani Warner (Ward 2), was one of several residents jarred out of her sleep after hearing a series of gunshots in quick succession, according to messages posted to the listserv for the Hyattsville Organization for a Positive Environment.  According to Sgt. Fire Rips Through University Park Home

Fire and rescue crews respond to late-night fire in rental home.

A group of five college student renters may need to find new digs temporarily following a small house fire in University Park yesterday.  Fire and rescue crews responded to the 7000 block of Baltimore Avenue in University Park at about 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, after receiving reports of a deck fire. Upon arrival, they discovered that the deck fire was only part of it. Fire was also found in the basement. Only one of the five tenants of the home was present at the time of the fire, and fire officials on the scene said that the tenant was not aware of the basement fire when he called 911.  No one was injured in the blaze, which was quickly put out. However, in order to get access to the fire, firefighters had to chop away the rear wall …

Hyattsville Crime Map: April Ends Lightly

Compared to previous weeks, Hyattsville had a comparatively benign week in crime at the end of April.

Yes, there's shoplifting (there is always shoplifting). And yes, there's a few thefts from cars and two burglaries. But according to data released yesterday by the Hyattsville City Police Department, the last week of April and the first week of May was relatively peaceful and devoid of violence. No reported assaults, home invasion robberies, sex offenses or armed robberies.  Still, thefts from autos continues to be an issue. The thefts from autos in this crime report were strung out along the southern end of the city along the Hamilton Street corridor.
