A spokesperson for the Prince George's County State's Attorney said she will use whatever tools she has at her disposal to prosecute crime.
Proponents of the death penalty in Maryland announced Friday that they will launch a petition to overturn the repeal signed into law this week by Governor Martin O'Malley. Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger and Washington County Del. Neil Parrott will spearhead and effort to obtain the 55,736 signatures required to add a referendum to the 2014 ballot, giving voters the opportunity to overturn the death penalty repeal. Those found guilty could receive an enhanced penalty of imprisonment for up to five years, in addition to any sentences given for the violent crime itself. Prosecutors in the murder trial of a former D.C. police officer say he shot his mistress to death and left their child to die in a hot car in Prince George's County, according to The Washington Times. Richmond Diallo Phillips, 40, allegedly killed the two because he didn't want to pay child support, argued prosecutor Angela Alsobrooks during opening statements Monday, the Times reported. The case is the first that Alsobrooks, Prince George's County State's Attorney, has personally prosecuted since being elected in 2010, according to The Washington Times. The State’s Attorney in Prince George’s County said she will push for tougher laws against people who make threats, after concluding that she could only charge a Crofton man with misdemeanor phone misuse. Top prosecutor Angela Alsobrooks insisted that local police “saved countless lives” when they detained Neil Prescott last week after he allegedly threatened to kill former co-workers at a Pitney Bowes facility in Capitol Heights. Police also found more than two dozen guns in his home in Anne Arundel County. A summer initiative to cut down crime draws mixed response from council.
Councilman Obie Patterson described residents in his district as “prisoners in their own homes.” Councilwoman Andrea Harrison wanted to know what could be done to keep prostitutes plaguing a neighborhood behind bars and Chairwoman Ingrid Turner wondered how crime could be going down while murder rates were up.
