Arcade Paused While Uses Pondered

Hyattsville officials are trying to figure out what, specifically, they want to do with the Arcade building.

With roughly $1.6 million in work already done, final design work on the city's redevelopment of the Arcade Building on Gallatin Street has been put on pause while the Hyattsville City Council tries to figure out what exactly they want to do with the building.  Located in downtown Hyattsville at 4318 Gallatin Street, the Arcade Building has been the subject of six years of ongoing renovations to shore it up for the city to do something with.  The work done so far on the building, begun in 2006, has been largely structural. Roofing was replaced, the structure stabilized, the interior gutted, and the Gallatin Street facade was redone with new windows and handicap accessible entrances.  Now all that work is done, and designers need more …

Hyattsville Turns 125 In Style At Arcade Building

Residents, city and county officials celebrated the city's 125th anniversary Friday night.

About 120 people came out to the Arcade building on Gallatin Street to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the City of Hyattsville. The party featured hors d'ourvres, a DJ playing music from the past, a photography booth and plenty of drinks. Local officials including Hyattsville Mayor Marc Tartaro, Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker and state Delegate Anne Healey (D-Dist. 22) welcomed guests and spoke breifly to those gathered. The Arcade was a fitting venue as its cornerstone was laid the same year the city was founded--in 1886--and it is being renovated by the into a performing arts center.  Over Hyattsville's history the building has been used as a silent movie theatre, bowling alley and shopping mall, …
