A Grand Opening for Battle of Bladensburg Visitor Center

Ribbon-cutting event launches Maryland War of1812 Bicentennial Celebration

It was the nineteenth century meeting the twenty-first century at this weekend's Grand Opening of the Battle of Bladensburg Visitor Center at Bladensburg Waterfront Park. The newly-opened center commemorates the key role of the town of Bladensburg and Prince George's County in the War of 1812, also known as America's "Second War of Independence." Exhibits tell the story one of the war's most significant battles which took place in Bladensburg, and more war history including the role of free and enslaved African Americans in the conflict. New Bladensburg Center to Kick Off Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration

Grand Opening of War of 1812 Visitor Center at Bladensburg Waterfront Park set for this weekend.

It's a little-know historical fact: Prince George's County, and the town of Bladensburg, played a key role in the War of 1812, also known as America's "Second War of Independence." A new Visitor Center at Bladensburg Waterfront Park opens this weekend to help re-tell the story of the town's role in America's "Forgotten War." The Battle of Bladensbug Visitor Center commemorates one of the war's most significant battles which took place in Bladensburg, and highlights Prince George's County's involvement. The Grand Opening of the Center also kicks off Maryland's 1812 Bicentennial Celebration. The weekend weather may be uncertain, but your plans don't have to be with this guide to local hot spots this weekend.

There's definitely no reason to be bored this weekend, with the unveiling of autumn, football games and a bundle of local events. But be sure to take your water bottle! It's going to be a scorching 86 degrees and sunny on Saturday. Flip that around for Sunday --it's expected to be only 68 degrees with showers. So here's what to do: First, there's the International Street Festival in Hyattsville scheduled for 3-8 p.m. on Sept. 25. Expect vendors, ethnic food and live music. Plus, a fireworks show is scheduled for dusk. At the other corner of the city will be Northwestern High School's annual homecoming.
