Prince George's Schools Speak Out on Fire in Student-Built Home

The school district plans to continue its project on a student-built home that broke out in fire.

Prince George's County Public Schools are "saddened and disappointed" by what appears to be an intentional fire at one of its student-built homes in Clinton, MD, spokesman Briant Coleman said. Two fires occurred in the same neighborhood within a week and have been ruled "suspicious" by the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department. One of the homes was no longer owned by the school system. "We sold it," said Coleman. As for the other home, he said, the work will go on. "Our students have been working extremely hard on this project, and we will continue to work closely with the Foundation for Applied Construction Technology for Students (FACTS) Board of Directors to ensure the project moves forward in spite of this devastating setback," …

Speed, Aggressive Driving Possible Factors in Crash That Killed PGPD Officer

Prince George's County police officials released more information regarding the crash that killed police officer Kevin Bowden on Oct. 18.

Police officials said the driver of a SUV involved in a fatal crash with a Prince George's County police officer may have caused the crash when she crossed several lanes of traffic and collided with the officer's cruiser. Officer Kevin Bowden, of District 4, died Thursday afternoon, when his cruiser slammed into a utility pole after colliding with an SUV along Surratts Road in Clinton. The woman driving the SUV was transported to Prince George's Hospital Center with injuries that were not life-threatening. On Friday, Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw said the driver of the SUV may have caused the crash. According to investigators, the driver was in a left turn lane on Branch Avenue at Surratts Road when she decided to cross …

[CRASH UPDATE]: Surratts Rd. Reopened 6 Hours After Fatal Crash

The crash forced the closure of Route 5 and Surratts Road on Thursday.

Update, 9 p.m.: Surratts Road was reopened nearly six hours after the road was shutdown Thursday afternoon after two cars were involved in a fatal car accident. Prince George's Police Office Kevin Bowden died from injuries sustained in the crash. Update, 6:30 p.m.: The officer involved in this serious accident has died. An update on this story is available. Update, 6:05 p.m.: Two southbound lanes of Branch Avenue have reopened, but the northbound side remains closed as officials continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
