Is Washington, DC, Capital of Cheating?

Dating website says the District is the least faithful city in U.S.

Washington, DC, tops the list of the “least faithful cities in America,” according to a blog post on the dating site AshleyMadison.com. AshleyMadison.com touts itself as “the most successful website for finding an affair and cheating partners,” and bases its ratings on the number of sign-ups to its site per capita in a given region. In 2012, 34,157 individuals in the District of Columbia enrolled on the website, earning the top spot on AshleyMadison’s top 10 list. Two Texas cities, Austin and Houston, round out the top three slots. No West Coast city appears on the list; East coast and Midwest cities complete the top 10: The website’s founder and CEO, Noel Biderman, attributes DC’s ranking to some very public events, saying, “With …

Survivor Stories Not Told Via Hologram at DC Holocaust Museum

Shoah Foundation clears confusion over project.

Last week, Patch reported that the New Dimensions in Testimony hologram project in development by the Shoah Foundation, which records the story of Holocaust survivors in a 3D format, could appear at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, within five years. According to an email received by Patch from Andrew Hollinger, director of communications for the museum, “There are no plans to introduce holograms into the museum experience," and he clarified that "the Museum is not involved in creating holograms of Holocaust survivors." A number of news outlets, including The Washington Post, Yahoo and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, reported the same information that originated from an Associated Press story.  When asked about the …

I would say the fact that Washington DC is not only the richest city in the US but it is also the most well educated has a great deal to do with it. The city is growing three times faster than the national average, which tells me people have more confidence living there. http://www.crimemuseum.org   more ›

Metrobus Schedule: No More App for That

The popular bus arrival time app has gone dark.

NextBusDC, a smartphone app that had been tracking the arrival times of Metro buses for users since 2009, has quit working, according to a Washington Post story. The app, which is the end product of a partnership between NextBus—a company that tracks transit system data, and AppTight, which makes the data user-friendly in an app format, stopped working on Dec. 20, according to the In The Capital website. In The Capital reported that a contractual relationship between the two companies “ceased,” with NextBus receiving only three days’ notice and AppTight no notice at all. AppTight’s Kelly Beener remarked that only the data feed to the DC app has stopped, and the San Francisco version continues to function. NextBus’ Ken Schmier told The …

This article isn't quite right. The Nextbus service is still working, it's just the app that's not. Why pay for an app when you can get the same info for free by pointing your phone's browser to nextbus.com?   more ›

Has Regifting Become Socially Acceptable?

Try one of the thrift or secondhand stores in Prince George's County or other DC neighborhoods for holiday gifts.

Have you ever regifted? You know, taken that unwanted desk adornment you got from your uncle last year and given it to a co-worker. While regifting has traditionally been frowned upon, the economy and environment may be helping shed some of the stigma associated with it. Some see it as a smart way to keep items out of landfills, while others view it as an opportunity to save money. In fact, regifting websites are cropping up all over the place, each with their own spin on the closeted practice. One site has proclaimed Dec. 20 as “National Regifting Day,” another has given prizes for the best regifting story and a third offers a “Gift Giver’s Guide to Gracious Regifting.”   Even if you don’t have some unwanted gifts on the top shelf of your…

What it boils down to is timing and waste. Either the gift is going to sit in some box for years until it is given away or it will be thrown in the trash or given to goodwill. Save yourself some clutter and just regift. My goodness.   more ›

DC Traffic Ticket Amnesty Should Please MD Drivers

Maryland drivers account for over 37 percent of overdue DC traffic tickets, which can be paid, without penalty, starting Aug. 1.

Of the $245.7 million owed to Washington, DC, in the form of overdue traffic tickets, Maryland drivers owe 37.6 percent, according to Lucinda Babers, director of the District's Department of Motor Vehicles. The overdue tickets include parking tickets, citations for moving violations and photo-enforcement tickets issued before January 1, 2010. But Marylanders will soon have a chance to pay off their tickets—which collectively total over $92 million—without paying any penalties. Yesterday, Mayor Vincent Gray announced a ticket amnesty program starting Aug. 1 that will allow delinquent ticket holders to pay up, fine-free. The amnesty will last through Jan. 27, 2012. It's the first ticket amnesty program offered by the District in 10 years. “…
