DeMatha Mass Shooting Drill Preps Police, Students

Police, students and faculty take part in live-shooter drill at DeMatha Catholic High School.

At 12:57 p.m. on Friday, a Hyattsville City Police Officer pulled up to the Convocation Center on the campus of DeMatha Catholic High School for a report of a disturbance. Soon, though, the situation revealed itself to be something much more serious.  Screams and the sounds of gunfire soon filled the hallways of the all-boys school. Two shooters were loose on campus, and they had already taken their first victims.  The officer radioed for help. Within minutes, officers from Hyattsville, Riverdale Park and other local jurisdictions were on the scene. Guns drawn, they approached the school buildings and began to sweep for the shooters.  A little more than eight minutes later, both shooters had been taken into custody by police. But this was …

Another wonderfully inspired forward thinking idea put in place by DeMatha. Great to coordinate with the entire community so that police and students have a dry run in case something serious does occur. I was a teacher for years and we knew "the drill" on paper, but didn't know its actual effectiveness if something serious were to occur.   more ›

DeMatha Upsets Baltimore Powerhouse in Shadow of Scandal

On a tough day for Stags, Stags get tough on Calvert Hall.

Less than 24 hours becoming the center of a prep-school prostitution scandal, the DeMatha Catholic High School football team held off a late rally to defeat Calvert Hall High School 23-14 before a small but friendly crowd at Naval Academy Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.  Throughout the day, the team endured something of a local media frenzy to cover the news that five non-starting members of the DeMatha varsity football team had been expelled for sneaking prostitutes into the team hotel (a Morrisville, NC Holiday Inn near the Raleigh Durham Airport) following their season opening victory on the road against Durham-based Hillcrest High School.  The scandal overshadowed what would otherwise be news of a surprising upset over Calvert Hall, …

N. Carolina Police Investigating DeMatha Prostitute Fling

Local police in Morrisville, NC have opened case into reports that five DeMatha football players hired prostitutes in their town.

Police in Morrisville, NC are investigating reports that five DeMatha Catholic High School football players hired the services of prostitutes following a season-opening road game victory over Durham-based Hillside High School last weekend.  According to Stephanie Smith, public information officer for the town of Morrisville, police have an open investigation into the incident. Citing the unfinished investigation, Smith was unable to release much information about the incident.  According to Smith, the incident apparently occurred at a Holiday Inn in Morrisville near the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Smith said that prostitution is not a big problem in Morrisville, a 7-sq. mile town with a population of 20,000 near Durham.  "This …

DeMatha Community 'Saddened and Hurt' by Prostitution Scandal

DeMatha Principal issues a statement responding to reports that football players hired prostitutes after a road game in Durham.

DeMatha Catholic High School's principal, Dr. Dan McMahon, has released a statement detailing how school officials learned of and responded to reports that five of its student-athletes on the football team hired three prostitutes and snuck them into the team hotel. "The school stands behind our coach, Elijah Brooks, his staff, the school staff who monitored the trip, and our students," wrote McMahon in the statement. "The school community is saddened and hurt by the actions of these few who do not reflect the character of the community." According to McMahon, the incident happened on Saturday, Sept. 1, following last week's road game against Hillside High School in Durham, NC. The team, which sent 65 players and 18 chaperones to Durham, …

Report: Five DeMatha Football Players Cut After Alleged Prostitute Fling

The incident happened at a team hotel after season opening road game in North Carolina, The Washington Post reports.

The DeMatha Catholic High School Football team has cut five of its players after they allegedly snuck three prostitutes into their hotel room following last week's season opening rout of Hillside High School in North Carolina, according to The Washington Post.  The Washington Post's Paul Tenorio reported the story late Thursday evening and is relying on information provided by two anonymous sources close to the team. The paper did not name any of the five players involved in the incident, citing their ages. School officials declined to go into detail on the incident. Head football coach Elijah Brooks and Principal Dan McMahon both told the Post that they would not be commenting.  The Washington Post reports two of the students involved …

It's pretty bad but kids do horrible stuff all the time. At least it's not a Columbine incident. The only people actually harmed in this scandal were the kids actually involved and their families, and most of the harm actually done is from the punishment not the crime.   more ›

Little Free Libraries Pop Up in City Parks

Next time you're strolling through Hyattsville's parks, feel free to take a book home with you.

As part of a budding "free library" movement in Maryland, Students from DeMatha Catholic High School are trying to bring a little literature to Hyattsville's parks. Yesterday, with the cooperation of the Hyattsville recreation department,  six DeMatha Juniors from the school's leadership institute installed two small wooden libraries on posts in two of the city's parks, Centennial Park in downtown Hyattsville and Robert J. King Park near the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Gallatin Street. The books inside the small libraries are there, free of charge, for anyone to check out. No library card required. If you take one out, maybe think about replacing it with a book of your own.  Abby Sandel, city communications manager and acting head of …

DeMatha Area Parking Restrictions Approved

City council makes small modification allowing residential parking zone to remain

With a unanimous vote, the Hyattsville City Council approved a modified version of a set of parking restrictions for two streets near DeMatha Catholic High School. Now, as soon as the Hyattsville Department of Public Works installs new signage, it will be illegal to park on the 5800 block of 44th Avenue and the 4300 block of Madison Street between the hours of 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.   The restrictions are designed to increase pedestrian safety during the school's morning and afternoon rush hours. But some nearby residents complained that the restrictions would unduly burden local residents looking for a legal spot to park. One 44th street resident who spoke before city council during the public comment period of the meeting …

City Considers No Parking Zones Near DeMatha

For the second time this year, Hyattsville City Council to debate parking changes in Arts District neighborhood near school

New parking restrictions near DeMatha Catholic High School are up for consideration by the Hyattsville City Council. The restrictions, proposed for the 5800 block of 44th Avenue and the 4300 block of Madison Street, are designed to accomplish two goals: make it easier for DeMatha students to walk across campus and to free up parking for neighborhood residents.  The new plan would restrict parking on the 5800 block of 44th Avenue and the 4300 block of Madison Street between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The proposed parking restrictions are the result of almost 10 months of evaluation by city officials, school employees and neighborhood residents.  The idea for a new set of parking restrictions along …
