Burger binge, set for May 11, to benefit Special Olympics.
Who among Hyattsville's city employees has the biggest gullet? The police department, that's who.
Raising money for the Special Olympics of Prince George's County, the Hyattsville City Police Department, the Hyattsville Public Works Department and the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department held a three team contest to scarf down as much hamburger as they could. The Hyattsville Police Department ended up winning the event, posting a combined time of just over 19 minutes to consume just about 90 hamburger patties, six hamburger buns and three baskets of fries. Ladies and gentlemen, charity has never looked this refined. Enjoy the photos, taken by yours truly as well as Hyattsville Communications Director and Acting Director of Recreation and Arts Abby Sandel. This is a contribution article, which means if you took photos yesterday, you…
Charity eating competition pits city police, fire and public works in a race to eat massive burger.
In a city that boasts a world within walking distance, maybe we can excuse the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department, and the city police and public works departments for participating in an eating competition, fundraiser and publicity stunt slated for 3 p.m. today. That's when they'll be gathering in Hyattsville's Elevation Burger to face off in a three-way race to see which team can scarf down a 10-patty hamburger in the shortest amount of time. No word yet on if there'll be a biggest-loser style competition to walk the calories off through Hyattsville's historic and oh so trendy mixed use neighborhoods. So that's where the eating competition comes in. There's even a trophy up for grabs, the inaugural Vertigo Cup. But it's also a …
How can you be with someone and not be able to have a peaceful bite to eat?
On my way back from the post office in Hyattsville, I decided to stop at Elevation Burger. I remember the day that Elevation Burger opened. I saw my Twitter timeline light up with the key words “free food.” Of course just as any starving artist I made my way over to the new burger joint only to be faced with a locked door. I was not the only one longing for some burgers. Outside stood five other people disappointed they would not be able to enter because the restaurant ran out of food. Today neither my pockets nor my diet could afford a run to Elevation Burger. Still I made I it my business to take a quick detour and stop for some food. When I pulled up I noticed that again Hyattsville was in the throes of development. EYA’s Arts District …

Local restaurants expect some competition from Busboys and Poets, but also many new customers.
Lots of Hyattsville residents are excited about the opening of Busboys and Poets—at 5331 Baltimore Avenue—especially the managers of nearby bars and restaurants. Staff at Elevation Burger and Franklin’s told Patch that they and other dining establishments in the neighborhood expect to see more foot traffic as an indirect result of more people coming out to the new Busboys. “If Elevation Burger opens in Hyattsville, it might not mean much at first to people who don’t live in Hyattsville,” said Ed Gruin, owner of the Elevation Burger across from Busboys at 5501 Baltimore Ave. “But then they come out to Busboys and they say ‘Hey, there’s an Elevation Burger down the street. Let’s go check it out.’” Gruin speaks from past experience. As he …

In order to be an “arts district,” you have to hear, see and feel it in the air.
I woke up this morning with a monstrous taste for a burger. I checked my calendar and just my luck my meeting with Hyattsville City Councilwoman Candace Hollingsworth (Ward 1) was in the afternoon. We decided to meet at one of my new favorite places in Hyattsville – Elevation Burger. I made sure I cleared my head for the “heart to heart” that I was about to encounter with Hollingsworth. I honestly thought that my initial ideas would be a bit “radical” but to my surprise they weren't. The ideas I came up with were ideas that could not only better the city but draw a very mature artistic crowd to the EYA’s Arts District Hyattsville. I walked into Elevation Burger to find Hollingsworth with her “mini me.” Her adorable daughter’s name is Zora…

A steady line wrapped around the entire dining room Tuesday evening at Chipotle at EYA's Arts District Hyattsville. No more paying to park at the College Park Chipotle. You can park for free behind EYA's East Village. Chipotle is the third business to open at the new development behind Elevation Burger, Yogi Castle and Essential Day Spa.

Actually, Mr. Suspect, as noted, when it's a large crowd and in certain situations, such captions aren't required, at least not by mwah. Touche!   more ›

The challenge with the parking on the west side of Rte. 1 is the traffic. I am all for progress, but even now, Rte 1 with the new commercial space not fully filled and the EYA development is making travel on this thoroughfare less than desirable. Not sure that the answer is more surface parking given how green the region is going, but a solution (more than one solution) is necessary now.   more ›
