Program looks to transform 20 properties within Gateway Arts District into large, public works of art.
The Hyattsville Community Development Corporation is looking to transform 20 properties within the Gateway Arts District into large, public works of art. But they need property owners to come forward with artistic visions for their properties. Dubbed the Street Art Initiative, the program already has 15 area muralists signed up and awaiting their assignments. A Dropbox gallery shows off the previous work of the selected artists and provides an artists statement for each one. Interested property owners can apply online with this form or can apply via snail mail by printing, completing and mailing this PDF application form. Annual spring event highlights arts community in Gateway Arts District.
The Gateway Arts District is looking for artists to showcase their work during the 9th Annual Gateway Community Development Corporation's Open Studio Tour on May 11, 2013. More than 50 artists in the Gateway Arts District have registered for the event so far, according to an announcement from the Gateway CDC. Registration details and applications can be downloaded at the Open Studio Tour's Eventbrite page. To participate, artists must have their studios located in neighborhoods east of Queens Chapel Road in the towns of Hyattsville, North Brentwood, Brentwood and Mount Rainier. Hyattsville officials are trying to figure out what, specifically, they want to do with the Arcade building.
With roughly $1.6 million in work already done, final design work on the city's redevelopment of the Arcade Building on Gallatin Street has been put on pause while the Hyattsville City Council tries to figure out what exactly they want to do with the building. Located in downtown Hyattsville at 4318 Gallatin Street, the Arcade Building has been the subject of six years of ongoing renovations to shore it up for the city to do something with. The work done so far on the building, begun in 2006, has been largely structural. Roofing was replaced, the structure stabilized, the interior gutted, and the Gallatin Street facade was redone with new windows and handicap accessible entrances. Film and digital media professionals sought to produce buzz-worthy video content for arts district.
The Hyattsville Community Development Corporation is looking for local filmmakers to produce a series of videos promoting the Prince George's County Gateway Arts and Entertainment District. The videos are intended to create a buzz for the district, according to a request for qualifications issued by the Hyattsville CDC earlier this week. "This request for qualifications is ongoing, on a per opportunity basis, and selected applicants will be contacted to work with the CDC on a prospective timeline, production details, and fee structure," reads a the request. Any film or video production artist or over the age of 18 is encouraged to send along their qualifications, with a preference for those who live and work in the Gateway Arts District. …

Hyattsville Community Development Corporation announces Street Art Initiative for Gateway Arts District.
The Hyattsville Community Development Corporation is looking for muralists to help transform up to 20 Route 1 building exteriors into artistic canvasses to showcase the Gateway Arts District. "For years, residents and local business owners along this stretch of the Route One Corridor have endured blighted buildings, unattractive exteriors that really constitute unrealized hotspots for creativity.," reads a press release from the Hyattsville CDC announcing the mural program. Exhibition, opening tonight, highlights career of Manon Cleary, a prominent D.C. artist who died last year.
You remember how today is going to be a busy day in the Gateway Arts District? Well, it's going to be a bit busier than previously reported. Yes, in addition to the Tomes for Tunes Used Book Sale at Hyattsville Elementary, the Hyattsville Arts Festival and a book signing by author Keith Boykin at Urban Eats Arts and Music Cafe, there is also an opening reception at the 39th Street Gallery in Brentwood for an exhibition of works by the late Manon Cleary. Organized by the Gateway Community Development Corporation, the exhibit will highlight 14 of Cleary's drawings and paintings. Cleary, who died in November 2011 at the age of 69, was a world renowned artist whose photorealistic and figurative paintings reside in the permanent collections …

New head of local economic development organization has years of non-profit experience.
For the first time in months, the Gateway Community Development Corporation has a new executive director. The Gateway CDC, a non-profit group which tries to use arts to encourage economic development in Mount Rainier, Brentood and North Brentwood, appointed Carole Bernard to head the organization. The Gateway CDC had been without an executive director since the departure of Michael Gumpert last year. "I'm thrilled to join the Gateway CDC and assist in its economic revitalization efforts along the U.S. Route 1 Corridor," said Bernard in a press release. "Mt. No action taken at meeting on proposal, but signs appear positive for developer.
The owners of a piece of rundown Hyattsville real estate that they want to turn it into a small Subway sandwich restaurant are in a bit of a pickle. According to Jim Chandler, economic development coordinator for the city of Hyattsville, the planned Subway franchise is at odds with two development standards in effect in downtown Hyattsville. One requirement mandates that developments have a two-way, 22 foot wide driveway to access rear parking areas. The other requirement mandates that new development frontage take up 80 percent of the front property line. Local residents got to experience bite-sized chunks of the programs available at Joe's Movement Emporium.
If you always wanted to see what, exactly, goes on at Joe's Movement Emporium in downtown Mount Rainier, then you should have been there this weekend. On Saturday, Joe's Movement Emporium held their annual fall open house. Visitors got to try out yoga, zumba, belly dancing and modern jazz dancing, among others. Since 1995, Joe's Movement Emporium has been bringing the performing arts to the lower Gateway Arts District. They also offer a host of wellness classes, like daily yoga classes, and arts and crafts events. Joe's also runs a Theater Training Program designed to help young people find jobs in the local arts community.
