Development Watch: Subway in Downtown Hyattsville?

Subway franchisee wants to redevelop vacant property on Route 1.

A Subway franchisee has his eyes on a blighted piece of downtown Hyattsville, with a proposal to transform a vacant aluminum-sided building near the intersection of Jefferson Street and Baltimore Avenue into a fast food restaurant. The building, located at 5516 Baltimore Avenue, most recently housed the ill-fated Alberta's Thrift Shop, whose sign can still be seen hanging above the fenced off structure.  The site sits next to the Happy Wash car wash at 5514 Baltimore Avenue.  If given approval by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, the site would be razed and redeveloped as a one-story, 1,400 sq. foot fast food sandwich restaurant.  But the property owner, Potomac resident Jagjot Khandpur, is requesting a variance, …

That’s very helpful information M. Ferguson, sounds like code needs to be reconsidered for this situation. It does not sound like the site is unusable if J. Khandpur’s plan is not approved. As for the bedroom comment, it lacks vision. I work for a company that enters into joint ventures when the situation is right. Seems to me this might be an opportunity. There are three/four small lots in a …   more ›

Gateway Arts District Pumps Up Internet Efforts

New site to collect coverage of Route 1 corridor.

The Gateway Arts District has launched a new blog to highlight news and social media coverage of life along Maryland's southern Route 1 corridor. It's the latest in a series of steps taken by the Gateway Arts District and the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation to improve their footing in the digital realm.  The new Route 1 news aggregator, dubbed the Gateway Arts District Reading Room, will collect posts from a variety of local media outlets in one location for convenient access. It's currently in a beta-launch right now, using a Wordpress domain, according to Justin Fair, economic development coordinator at Hyattsville CDC and the content manager for MyGatewayArts.org. But before long, the site will be incorporated under the …

Gateway Arts District Launches Revamped Site

New site includes directories for businesses, artists and studios along Route 1 corridor.

Are you an artist looking for a studio to lease along the Route 1 corridor? Then you might want to check out the Gateway Arts District's updated website, MyGatewayArts.org. The site now boasts a small directory for artists, businesses and studios along the Route 1 corridor between Mount Rainier and Hyattsville's northern border with Riverdale Park. Don't see your name or business on the directory? You can add it here.  The overhaul of the website has been ongoing for some time now. Back in February, organizers behind the website put out an open call for artists, designers and other businesses in the Gateway Arts District to submit their information to the site for the directories. The updated site also features expanded informational …

DMV Film Fest Announces Schedule

Films from Ireland, Spain, England and Washington, D.C. to show this weekend at Brentwood Arts Exchange.

The newly relocated DMV International Film Festival has released its screening schedule. Unfortunately, it's a bit short of its ambitious 25 films promised in initial press releases announcing that the film festival would be relocating to the Brentwood Arts Exchange at the Gateway Arts Center after a two year run at the Goethe Institute in Washington, D.C.  Instead, the festival will screen two international feature films, one local documentary and two short films.  The festival kicks off on Friday, June 15 with the opening night feature Chocolate City, which runs for 45 minutes beginning at 5:45 p.m. The locally produced documentary tells the story of the gentrification of Southeast Washington, D.C. through the eyes of the poor residents …

Film Fest Moves from D.C. To Brentwood

The DMV International Film Festival begins its third year in our neck of the woods.

After a three year run in downtown Washington, a local art-house film festival is switching venues from the Goethe Institute to the Brentwood Arts Exchange at the Gateway Arts Center.  That festival would be the DMV International Film Festival, or DMVIFF for short. Local cinephiles will have 25 films to choose from throughout the three day festival.  The festival is sponsored by the Hyattsville Community Development corporation and the Prince George's Arts and Humanities Council. The film festival will be held on June 15, 16 and 17. The exchange is located at 3901 Rhode Island Avenue in Brentwood.  The festival's opening featured film is Tin Man, from Irish filmmaker Conor Slattery. According to IMDB, it tells the tale of a street …

Studio Tour Hailed as Success

The organizers behind the eighth annual Gateway Open Studio Tour estimate record turnout for event.

Art aficionados from near and far could not have asked for a better day to hold the eighth annual Gateway Arts District Open Studio Tour. Amid clear skies and warm weather, organizers estimated that more than 400 people toured local arts venues scattered between Hyattsville, North Brentwood, Brentwood and Mount Rainier to check out the works of about 120 local artists. Kristus Ratliff, one of the organizers of the event, said she was pleased with the turnout for the open studio tour.  "I feel like it went really well," said Ratliff in an interview. "We found that there were a lot of people who came from out of the neighborhood, and that's huge." Laura Rogers, president of the Gateway Community Development Corporation Board, estimated that …

Brentwood Council Split Over CDC Support

A contentious debate about the merits of the Gateway Community Development Corporation has taken root in Brentwood.

Concerns over communication and the pace of development along Brentwood's blighted US Route 1 corridor have a majority of its city council questioning how the Gateway Community Development Corporation works with the town. Brentwood's elected leaders are now embroiled in a contentious debate over the role of the Gateway CDC and have asked representatives of the group to come before the city council to discuss its plans for the area. "Since I've been here in December, they have not come into the town," said Councilor Ann Wells in an interview. Wells was appointed to a vacant council seat back in December. "So, we need to define what that relationship, what that partnership is, and our expectations of each other." The Gateway CDC is a …

Hyattsville, Mt. Rainier And The Artist Gap

Is Mount Rainier's arts community more authentic and more numerous than Hyattsville's? Does it even matter?

When it comes to the arts, is Hyattsville a poser? Is Mount Rainier's arts community more authentic or more numerous? These were the intentionally incendiary, if only slightly, questions raised at yesterday's Conversations in the Corridor discussion at Busboys and Poets on Baltimore Avenue in Downtown Hyattsville.  Hyattsville City Councilor Candace Hollingsworth (Ward 1), moderator for the event, used the questions to lead a conversation which tangled with the idea of how to make the four-city coalition of the Gateway Arts District–Hyattsville, Brentwood, North Brentwood and Mount Rainier–work as a cohesive unit.  Justin Fair, content manager for MyGatewayArts.org and editor of the SoulStrong Arts blog, said it isn't a question of who has…

Is it a competition? Both communities are working hard. I wish I was able to make this discussion. Over the past 3 years we've brought the area close to 40 art shows with well over 200 artists from around the area. We've enjoyed a number of Brentwood / Hyattsville collaborations. I see both areas investing in the arts. Maybe this is a bit rehtorical, but what exactly does that question mean, …   more ›
