Construction and land acquisition delays push back opening date, but some residents say that's fine.
County school officials announced this week that the new Hyattsville Area Elementary School, under construction on Nicholson Street in West Hyattsville, will be opening one year later than planned. But the delay doesn't bother some West Hyattsville residents. "I actually look at that as being a gift," said Jennifer Kubit, a West Hyattsville resident who has been increasingly active in public affairs concerning her neighborhood. "I think it gives us time to gather community resources and get some sort of cohesive community involvement around coming up with academic resources that works for this area." Vehicles will not access the school from Nicholson Street says Mayor Tartaro.
The new, as yet-unnamed, Hyattsville Area Elementary School officially has a new address at 6110 Editors Park Drive, according to Mayor Marc Tartaro. The under-construction Hyattsville Area Elementary School will be ready for next school year, according to cautiously optimistic officials from the Prince George's County Public School System. In a brief presentation before the Hyattsville City Council last night, Yale Stenzler, interim director of the capital programs for PGCPS, said that the project is moving ahead on schedule, with a projected completion date by the end of August 2013. "The expectation is that it will be ready for the next school year," said Stenzler as he showed members of the council a rendering of the finished school. County, city and state officials broke ground on the school this past spring. It will serve elementary-age children in the West Hyattsville area. The…

I was wondering what is being constructed at the end of Oliver Street at 35th Avenue? It used to be an unused parking lot, but for the past several months, the area has been fenced off and the lot was torn up. It doesn't appear that much work has been done for the past several weeks, however. I'm sure this project has something to do with the elementary school, but I was wondering what it will be…   more ›
