Later, the Hyattsville City Council unanimously approves request to use Magruder Park for 2013 CX.
This past October's Hyattsville CX, a cyclocross race held at Magruder Park, raised $3,000 for the Prince George's County Special Olympics program. At last night's Hyattsville City Council meeting, race organizers presented an oversized check to county Special Olympics athletes and officials. The $3,000 haul is significantly lower than the $7,000 raised during the previous Hyattsville CX in 2011. Eric Griffin, President of the Route 1 Velo cycling club which helped organize the race, said revenue was down this year because because of an increase in overhead costs and lower attendance (likely caused by the first rainy Hyattsville CX in the event's history) hurting concession sales. "There weren't as many spectators spending as much time …

Cyclocross race draws about 400 racers to city on damp Sunday.
It was a smooth but wet day for about 400 off-road bicycle racers in the fifth annual Hyattsville CX. The wet weather was no problem for these racers, who seemed to relish the sprinking rain throughout the day. They compete in a discipline called cyclocross, a form of mixed-terrain bicycle riding which combines elements of road and mountain bike racing. In addition to speeding down grassy straights and negotiating tricky turns, riders must also dismount to navigate obstacles in technical sections like barriers and fallen riders. "It went really well, consider we were at 40 percent rain at the beginning of the week, then up to 90 percent rain in the middle of the week, then down to 60 percent rain for Saturday," said Schieken. "We ended …

The Hyattsville CX raises money for the Special Olympics of Prince George's County's cycling team. Last year's CX earned $7,000 for the organization. Racers will want to leave themselves plenty of time to get in position for their heats. Full schedule of races can be found here. Even if you're not racing, neighborhood residents will want to take…

Does the Hyattsville CX have a neighborhood enemy? Broken bottles found hidden along race course.
All week long, members of bicycling team Route 1 Velo have been prepping for the annual Hyattsville CX (short for cyclocross) race. Part of that prep includes clearing the wooded trail of dangerous debris like trash, loose sticks and dangerous rocks. The Hyattsville CX is on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Magruder Park in Hyattsville off of Hamilton Street. The Hyattsville CX raises money for the Prince George's County Special Olympics cycling team. Last year's event raised $7,000 for the organization. But last night, after race officials had already swept the course, they returned to find glass from broken bottles hidden along several portions of the trail. "It wasn't just a couple of broken bottles," said Hyattsville …

A review of the fashionable, fun and fast garage race in Crystal City, previews of upcoming rides and races.
As part of an burgeoning effort to turn my two-wheeled exercise into a competitive activity, I registered to race in the Crystal City Diamond Derby on Sept. 29. The Crystal City Diamond Derby is a combination of a bicycle race and a fashion show. It definitely doesn't take itself too seriously, and I think that's what attracted me to it. I was looking for a low-pressure way to gauge my readiness for the Hyattsville CX which I'll be riding in this weekend. Held in a subterranean parking garage in Crystal City, the Diamond Derby featured races for kids and adults, fashion, food, music and beer for fans of two wheeled transportation in the D.C. area. The day began at 2 p.m. down at the Titanic Memorial on the Southeast Waterfront. There, …

Organizers kick into high gear as City Council approves use of Magruder Park for upcoming race.
What has 1,400 wheels, is very muddy and is held in Hyattsville? The answer is the Hyattsville CX cyclocross race. Last night, the Hyattsville City Council gave unanimous approval to the Route 1 Velo cycling club to hold the fourth annual Hyattsville CX at Magruder Park on Oct. 7, 2012. Organizers hope to have between 600 and 700 racers take park in this year's race. The race is part of the Mid Atlantic Bicycle Racing Association Super 8 race series. The race also raises funds for the Prince George's County Special Olympics program. Last year's CX raised $7,000 for the county Special Olympics team. In all four years, the race series has raised more than $15,000 for the county Special Olympics team, according to race organizer and Arrow …

I totally agree with Jim. Why are we letting recreational event happen in our parks. The football, soccer and ultimate frisbee games and practices just destroy the grass. Baseball players dig holes in the batters box's and pitchers mound. The wood chips get thrown all over in the playground. Not to mention all of the graffiti all over the grass. Hyattsville would be a much better place if we lock…   more ›
