New Hyattsville Middle Principal, PTA Members Talk Shop

The county cut after school sports for middle schools, but new HMS Principal Kimberly Washington said she would like to offer intramural sports and partner with Nicholas Orem Middle School for that.

Despite some cuts around the county school system, Hyattsville Middle School is fully staffed with instructors this year. Members of the school’s PTA met with new principal Kimberly Washington Wednesday to talk about their goals for the 2011-2012 school year. There are three new staffers at the school this year and two of them are secretaries. Prince George’s County Public Schools slashed one-half of a dance instructor and one-half of an orchestra instructor. But Washington said she’s asking the teachers that remain to pick up that slack and offer rich, well-rounded classes, and perhaps offer a hip-hop type dance class. Great. She wants a hip-hop class. No mention of being on a school improvement plan. No mention of failing to meet the Adequate Yearly Progress goal for 2011. No mention of anything academic, at least as reported here. But maybe the kids can learn hip-hop.   more ›

Slice of Hyattsville Life

For Annie

Love can get no more real than what I had with my grandmother.

This week has been a sad week. I must say it is one of the hardest weeks I have ever been faced with. I find myself typing this column wondering, “How I am even able to speak about this subject matter?” I know I have written about her briefly before but at this time my grandmother is no longer with me. I feel like I’m in a surreal place, as if at any minute I will wake up and say, “That was a weird dream.” The reality is the person that brought me back to this place I call home is gone. She was a pillar of strength, what an independent woman should be. She took care of her responsibilities and her family and I never heard her complain about it. Of course as a family we all had our moments where we got of her nerves. But she loved us dearly…
