Hyattsville Man to be Sentenced Friday in Real Estate Scheme

Along with three others, a 41-year-old Hyattsville man tried to fraudulently sell DC property.

A 41-year-old Hyattsville man is scheduled to be sentenced May 3 in a scheme to defraud DC homeowners out of their properties. Three others involved in the plot also have pleaded guilty. Michael Brown plead guilty in February, along with Jamaul Robert, 35, of College Park; Patricia Mantilla, 35, of Lorton, VA; and Melissa McWilliams, 35, of Chantilly, VA. Brown recruited straw sellers to sign documents and falsely act like the property owners, according to the State's Attorney's office in Virginia. Most of the victim's were elderly or the heirs of those owners who had recently died. Roberts, according to court records, identified homes with overdue tax bills and using sites like Ancestry.com and the city's property tax database they tried …

Community Rallies Around Hyattsville Family After Tragedy Strikes

After Dustin Franco suffered a brain injury, neighbors, friends and family came together in a show of support.

When Hyattsville resident Laura Reams came home on March 14 to find that her husband, Dustin Franco, had fallen down the basement stairs, she initially thought he just needed staples for the cut on his head. A trip to the emergency room and at a CT scan later, they found out that Franco, also 36, had suffered a brain injury that would require cranial surgery and months or years of recovery. The Accident Though they are not certain exactly what happened—Franco does not remember the incident—Reams said they think he slipped going down the basement stairs. The railing was loose, so he may have reached for that, but ultimately they think he fell and hit his head on the concrete floor. “He hit his head. He was walking and talking when I found …

People need to forget about bike lanes and realize BICYCLES HAVE NO PLACE ON ROADS! Cars pay for registration, inspection, etc, etc, etc,. Meanwhile any dummy with more money than brains can get a bike and ride it wrecklessly through traffic. Allowing bikes on roads is like allowing cars to drive on train tracks, then blaming the train when the car is destroyed.   more ›

Mi Patio: What's at Stake?

Examining the possible outcomes of Hyattsville restaurant's pursuit of a new entertainment permit.

Do you want a Mi Patio which can host musical entertainment three nights a week but cannot card or search patrons at the door? Or do you want a Mi Patio which can card and search patrons at the door but could also host musical entertainment seven nights a week? Those are essentially the two outcomes possible in the debate over Mi Patio's special entertainment permit application before the Prince George's County Board of License Commissioners, also known as the liquor control board.  Those who are opposed to Mi Patio's application would effectively be lobbying for the situation at the restaurant to stay as it is now, at least on paper. Per the restaurant's pre-existing exemption to the special entertainment permit, live and deejayed music …

Mapping Support for Sidewalks in University Hills

Survey data released by the city of Hyattsville breaks down support for sidewalks on a block by block basis.

Hey Hyattsville! I want to reassure you that I an still alive, though I spent the second half of last week recovering from a fever. Unfortunately, my self imposed quarantine meant that I missed a much anticipated city meeting which reviewed the results of the University Hills sidewalk survey.  While I couldn't report on the he-said-she-said aspects of the meeting, city officials did make the survey response data public. From that data, a portion of which gauged the neighborhood's receptiveness to sidewalks on a street by street level, we can plot on a map the areas of University Hills where sidewalk opposition is stronger and weaker.  That's exactly what I did above. The greener the area means a dominant percentage of survey respondents on…

Hyattsville Set to Host College Park Academy

New public charter school for middle, high schoolers to operate at former St. Mark's school site.

The College Park Academy will come to have a slightly misleading moniker when it opens in northern Hyattsville later this year, according to a report published yesterday in The Gazette.  The new charter school originally was planned to open in College Park but will instead be opening in the currently vacant school campus at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church on Adelphi Road.  The move comes after school officials abandoned plans to operate the school at the old College Park Elementary School building, a block off of Route 1 on Calvert Road.  However, the College Park Elementary School building is more than 100 years old–it was last used as a school in 1978–and needed costly renovations to pass inspection and meet the needs of its …
