Judge Finds Probable Cause For Prosecution Of Man Charged In UTC Stabbing Murder

Derrell Emmanuel Mason, 17, is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the stabbing death of Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews.

District Court Judge Tiffany H. Anderson Thursday ruled that there is probable cause to prosecute Derrell Emmanuel Mason for the June 30 murder of a Bladensburg man at University Town Center. At a preliminary hearing Prince George’s County Police Det. Thomas Hollowell, lead investigator in the case, took the stand and recounted the investigation. Mason, 17, is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the stabbing death of Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews where three others were also stabbed. Hollowell said when he arrived to 6400 America Boulevard he met with officers from the Hyattsville Police Department, who were the first law enforcement presence on the scene. Man Charged In Hyattsville Murder Appeared In Court Today

Derrell Emmanuel Mason is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the stabbing death of Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews.

A preliminary hearing for a man charged with the June 30 murder of a 21-year-old man at University Town Center has been postponed until Aug. 25. Derrell Emmanuel Mason, 17, of Washington, D.C., Thursday morning was brought before Prince George’s County District Court Judge G. Richard Collins in prison orange and handcuffs for a scheduled preliminary hearing. Mason is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the stabbing death of Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews. Dorothy Engel, an attorney in the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Homicide Unit, is prosecuting the case. She asked Collins for a continuance of the preliminary hearing because the state needed more time to present an appropriate …

Friends Hold Vigil For Man Killed At Hyattsville's UTC

Friends of Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews held a vigil Saturday.

Friends of the man who was fatally stabbed at University Town Center on June 30 held a vigil for him Saturday evening behind Northwestern High School. They posted pictures from the vigil on a Facebook page created in honor of Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews, who was stabbed when a fight broke out between 25 to 30 people at the restaurant and retail hub in Hyattsville that evening. Prince George's County Police have since arrested a man in connection with the stabbing but Smith-Matthews' friends remain vigilant about keeping his memory alive.

Man Charged With Murder Scheduled For Aug. 11 Court Appearance

Documents from the District Court of Maryland show that Mason has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree assault in Smith-Matthews' stabbing death.

Court information about the case of Derrell Emmanuel Mason, 17, of Washington, D.C. indicates that the youth is charged with three counts in the June 30 homicide of Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews. Documents from the District Court of Maryland show that Mason has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree assault in Smith-Matthews' stabbing death. The victim, of Bladensburg, was killed in an alleged fight at Hyattsville's University Town Center. Police arrested Mason late last month and he is being held pending a preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for Aug. 11 at 8:45 a.m., court documents say.

Police Make Arrest In UTC Stabbing

County police have arrested a Washington, D.C. man in the homicide case of Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews.

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has arrested Derrell Emmanuel Mason, 17, of the 3600 block of 13th Street N.W. in Washington, D.C. in connection with the June 30 homicide of Leonard R. Smith-Matthews at University Town Center. Through their investigation, detectives identified Derrell Mason as a suspect in this case and got a warrant for his arrest. Mason was arrested on Monday at his home on a warrant charging first-degree murder.  He is being held in the District and is awaiting extradition to Prince George’s County. Young Rapper, Friend Laid to Rest

Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews, 21, of Edmonston was fatally stabbed on June 30 at Hyattsville's University Town Center. His funeral was Friday morning.

Not much has been said publicly about the quiet, young rapper from Edmonston, but if his funeral Friday morning was any indication, Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews was a catalyst among those who knew and loved him. A few hundred people came out to First Baptist Church of North Brentwood to remember the 21-year-old whose life was snuffed out in a stabbing on June 30 at Hyattsville’s University Town Center. “The one thing that I found was that he was a young man like any young man who was really just trying to find himself,” said the Rev.
