Last night, Hyattsville City Council members got their first gilmpse at a proposal to construct a new Chick-Fil-A restaurant along East West Highway on the parking lot at the Mall at Prince George's. Chick-Fil-A wants to build the fast-food restaurant with a drive through, which goes against the table of approved uses within the Prince George's Plaza Transit District Overlay Zone which encompasses the area. City and county planners want to redevelop Hyattsville's East-West Highway corridor into a more pedestrian friendly environment. If you've walked through a the Mall at Prince George's, you've probably had to deal with one particular architectural annoyance unique to the shopping center: the vertical support columns which line the main hall. For an unaware shopper, the columns can become an unwelcome surprise if you happen to walk into one while distracted by conversation or an idle glance at your smartphone. But it wasn't always this way. When the mall first opened in 1959 as Prince George's Plaza, shoppers had a lot more room to maneuver because the mall didn't have a roof. Target store remains open until further notice.
The Mall at Prince George's in Hyattsville has been closed today as a result of Hurricane Sandy, according to a press release sent out just before noon. "Due to inclement weather, The Mall at Prince Georges in Hyattsville, MD will be closed to the public on October 29," reads the press release. "This decision has been made in order to ensure the safety of our shoppers and employees during the hurricane." But one store at the mall, Target, remains open "until the storm shuts us down", according to a receptionist at the Hyattsville store. The Mall at Prince George's will be posting updates on Twitter and Facebook as the storm progresses.

Hyattsville mall set to host event linking school officials, local businesses and organizations with parents and students.
Yesterday we told you about the Prince George's County back-to-school fair. Today we bring you news of another back-to-school event closer to home in Hyattsville. On Saturday, August 4, the Mall at Prince George's will host a Back-to-School Kids Expo from noon to 4 p.m. The event will connect parents with information about after school programs and other educational information. Local businesses and organizations are invited to participate in the mall's back-to-school expo, but exhibitor tables cost $300. A discounted $250 early-bird table rate expired on July 6. Interested organizations can sign up through this website.

Looking to get rid of your old gizmos and confidential documents? Then head down to the Mall at Prince George's on Saturday, April 21. There, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., technicians from recycling company Turtle Wings, Inc. will be collecting used electronics from computers to batteries to cell phones and pretty much anything else electronic you can think of. It's all a part of the mall's Earth Day celebration "Lets Recycle!", held in the rear parking lot of the mall off of Toledo Terrace. Technicians from First Secure Shred, Inc. will also be on hand to destroy old documents like cancelled checks and financial papers. The shredding service has a limit of four copy paper size boxes per person.

Fletcher Hardiman says the secret to his hair salon's success and longevity is an emphasis on customer service.
After 20 years, Fletcher Hardiman's Hyattsville hair salon has cut, curled and combed through thousands of miles of hair, all of it at the Mall at Prince Georges. Though, when he opened his Accent Hair Salon it was called Prince George's Plaza. The name is not the only thing that's changed for Hardiman in his two decades in the hair business. He also remembers a time before the Green Line of the Metro opened up, bringing customers to the mall who might not otherwise have made the trip. "It's a dynamic environment," said Fletcher of his adopted home. "The county has gone through some changes since we opened." Actually, there is a BB&T with drive-thru immediately next door to the Chick-fil-a site; it opened less than 5 years ago. Not even to mention the SunTrust and Capitol One drive-thrus in the mall parking lot. And what about the CVS drive-thru across the street?
