Holiday Craziness in Hyattsville

It was a typical whirlwind holiday shopping season at The Mall at Prince George's in Hyattsville this year.

Christmas 2011 is officially over and now that the wrapping paper and bows have been stowed for another year, Patch thought you might like to know what the major crazes were during the holiday’s mad rush. Midnight of Dec. 22 marked the release of the highly acclaimed Jordan sneaker— 'The Concords.' The shoes brought in lines of anxious teens and parents inside and outside The Mall at Prince George’s in Hyattsville. Many customers waited in line for up to eight hours only to find out that the popular shoe had been sold out. Hyattsville Police Blotter: Dec. 11-17, 2011

A few arrests, stolen pocketbooks and property damage.

Dec. 11 At the 4300 block of Hamilton Street, just before midnight, an unknown suspect driving a dark sedan approached a man walking in this area. The suspect got out of his car, implied he had a gun and robbed the victim of his groceries and wallet. The vehicle then fled toward Washington, D.C.   Dec. 12 At the 3800 block of Oglethorpe Street, sometime during the night, someone entered a parked car and stole property. At the 6100 block of 42nd Place, sometime between 9:45 and 11:45 a.m., someone broke into a residence in this area and stole property. Santa Photos for the Whole Family Thanks to Hyattsville Mall

The Mall at Prince George's offered four evenings where local pet owners could include their animals in a holiday family photo with Old Saint Nick.

All you dog lovers out there know how much a part of the family your pooches are. That goes for cat lovers too! This year, getting your pets in a Christmas photo was made easier thanks to The Mall at Prince George's, which hosted four evenings for pet owners to include their pets in a festive family photo with Santa. Dec. 3 At the Mall at Prince George’s, about 3 p.m., a victim was robbed at knifepoint by two unknown suspects in the rear parking lot.   Dec. 5 At the 4500 block of Emerson Street, sometime since Nov. 30, someone stole the rear tag from a parked vehicle. At the Mall at Prince George’s, about 2:30 p.m., a suspect was arrested for shoplifting. At the Mall at Prince George’s, about 5:15 p.m., a suspect was arrested for shoplifting. Hyattsville Police Encourage Safe Driving, Theft Prevention During Holiday Season

Here are a few tips from the Hyattsville police about how to avoid potential Grinch-esque situations while out shopping for Christmas.

With the holidays around the corner, Hyattsville residents are urged to use caution as roadways and parking lots fill with seasonal travelers. “The closer we get to Christmas, the worse the traffic is going to get,” said Sgt. Chris Purvis of the Hyattsville Police Department. Despite the increasing number of cars on the road, in Prince George’s County deaths resulting from car crashes have decreased between 2005 and 2009, according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Holiday traffic jams also occur in parking lots as customers flock to local retail areas such as the Mall at Prince George’s and the Hyattsville Arts District to complete holiday shopping. “[The mall parking lot] is always busy, but especially …
