Proposed Bills Would Increase PSC Transparency

Three new bills introduced on Tuesday in the Maryland House of Delegates aim to improve public participation in the Maryland Public Service Commission's oversight of utilities such as Pepco.

Three bills introduced Tuesday in the Maryland House of Delegates aim to make communication between the Maryland Public Service Commission and utility companies operating in Maryland more transparent. "We have a system in which the Maryland Public Service Commission [which oversees electric utility companies, including Pepco and BGE] had allowed our utilities to neglect their infrastructure to the point where it is literally crumbling," said state Delegate Al Carr Jr. (D-District 18), who introduced the three bills to improve public participation and public confidence in the PSC's oversight of utilities, according to a statement from Carr's office. County Officials Show Support for Gun Legislation

Public officials will attend Wednesday's hearing on Governor Martin O'Malley's Firearm Safety Act of 2013.

Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks and Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw will joining other state officials in Annapolis Wednesday showing their support for the  Firearm Safety Act of 2013. Magaw will be present to show support and Alsobrooks will be among those actually testifying in support of the bill, according to PGPD and the state's attorney's office.  Alsobrooks will also testify in support of Senate Bill 228, which, if passed, would eliminate the one-year statute of limitations for prosecuting people charged with using a handgun to commit a violent crime. Maryland Democrats Push for Sick Leave Law

Legislators, prepping for statehouse fight, hail Busboys and Poets as example of business which has thrived while providing sick leave to all its employees.

Andy Shallal, owner of regional restaurant chain Busboys and Poets, doesn't quite understand why people would oppose legislation mandating sick-leave for Maryland workers.  "Obviously they've never had their food sneezed on, or at least they don't think so," said Shallal. "But they've had their food sneezed on. If they've eaten out, one day, they've had their food sneezed on." It was a blunt statement for a restaurateur to make in front of a crowd in his own restaurant, and when he said it one could hear the room fall silent for half a second while the words sank in.
