Northwestern Football Coach Has High Hopes

The football Wildcats of Hyattsville's Northwestern High School have their first scrimmage on Wednesday against Riverdale Baptist.

Bryan Pierre, head football coach at Northwestern High School, has three good reasons to be excited about this season. And those three—Darius Victor, Victor Tamba and John Johnson—are all juniors, which bodes well for 2012 at Northwestern. Victor, as a sophomore, was the leading rusher and also paced the Wildcats in tackles on the defensive side of the ball in 2010. "He is something special," Pierre said. Tamba is a 6-foot-5, 325-pound lineman who will see action on both sides of the ball this year while Johnson, who was promoted to the varsity level from junior varsity last year, is a wide receiver and free safety who will also go both ways. Despite a record of 4-6 overall last year, Pierre has high hopes for this season. The Wildcats …

Football Wrap Up: Northwestern Rebounds from Rocky Start for Respectable Finish

Despite starting 0-4, Northwestern finished the season 4-6.

The Northwestern High School varsity football team ended its fall season last week on a much different note than it began. Despite a rocky start to the season, which commenced with four straight losses for the Wildcats, the team managed to turn around their losing ways towards the end of the year. Last Saturday's game ended in a 7-0 victory over the Bowie Bulldogs. The win brought Northwestern's final record to 4-6 for the year. "We put some good plays together, and that showed in our Bowie game," said Northwestern Athletic Director Terri Dendy. The victory, however, did not come easy. In fact, it was preceded by a great deal of defeat, as the Wildcats opened their season with a 28-6 loss against the C.H. Flowers Jaguars, which was the …

Football Attendance Low, ADs Debate the Cause

Whether it's due to indifference or frugality, the bottom line is people simply aren't attending football games at Northwestern or Parkdale High School.

Baseball may be America's pastime, but football is America's sport. The high school quarterback, varsity captain and homecoming king, with his cheerleader girlfriend latched to his arm, is an iconic American image. Street stickball left the conscience of this country along with Carter Administration. In its place came Joe Montana, Gatorade, Brett Favre and John Madden video games.  In a time where a Monday night matchup between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans, two of the NFL's bottom feeders, gets higher television ratings than the National League Championship Series between the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies, there is simply no evidence to support the case that this country is not football-obsessed. …

Northwestern Suffers From Poor Practice Week, Loses to DuVal

The Wildcats lost to DuVal by a final score of 34-7 on Saturday.

It came down to preparation on Saturday. According to Northwestern head football coach Bryan Pierre, it was as simple as that. The Wildcats (2-6), who were downed by the DuVal Tigers (3-5) by a final score of 34-7, didn't put in the necessary work this week to defeat even a team with an identical record coming into the game, Pierre said. "We talked about them being 2-5 and us being 2-5. Both of us were still in the hunt to try and be .500 on the season," Pierre said. "DuVal practiced. …They knew what we were going to do. They got prepared for us. We didn't get prepared for them, and we deserved to lose today." Northwestern actually struck first in the game, scoring on their opening drive on a 4-yard run by sophomore running back Gerald …
