'Heroic' Perry Hall Guidance Counselor Praised by Students, Social Media for Stopping Shooter

Students say it was Jesse Wasmer, a guidance counselor at Perry Hall High School, who intervened during a shooting in the school's cafeteria.

Students and social media are reporting that Jesse Wasmer, a Perry Hall High School guidance counselor, intervened after a 15-year-old student reportedly shot another student in the school's cafeteria Monday morning. "I turned around and the kid's got a gun, and Mr. Wasmer, one of the counselors, pushes him up against a vending machine and then he shot one more off," Ryan Brady, a student who witnessed the shooting, told Patch. Wasmer declined to comment when contacted by Patch. A Facebook page has been created to thank Wasmer. At 4:30 p.m. Monday it had nearly 950 fans. Several Twitter and Facebook users have also identified Wasmer as the person who first made contact with the alleged shooter.  Mike Barnstein wrote on Facebook: Thank you …

PGCPS Talks School Safety, Reacts to Perry Hall High Shooting

Prince George's County school officials discussed school safety after hearing about a school shooting 55 miles north in Perry Hall.

  It's only the second week of school in Prince George's County, but officials are making school safety a priority in light of a school shooting that occurred outside of Baltimore Monday morning. According to Perry Hall Patch, officials say a 15-year-old student shot a 17-year-old student in the back at Perry Hall High School on the first day of school. The victim was airlifted to a local shock trauma center in serious condition, Baltimore County police told Patch. » See what people are saying on social media. UPDATE: Shooting at Perry Hall High School, Suspect in Custody

The incident took place Monday morning during the first day of the 2012-2013 school year.

BALTIMORE, MD -- UPDATED (4:19 p.m.)—A 15-year-old student shot a 17-year-old classmate at Perry Hall High School on Monday, the first day of the Baltimore County school year, officials said.  A guidance counselor at the school "heroically" stopped the attack by grabbing the shooter, police said. Baltimore County police said in a news release that the student who had been shot was transported by helicopter to a local hospital.
