A young woman went into labor on the Metro's red line during rush hour on Thursday afternoon. A story in the Washington Post describes the woman as being "in her early 20s" and "sitting in the first row of seats on a rail car." The woman's water broke on a train headed for Grovesnor-Strathmore, prior to the Gallery Place station, where the other passengers were offloaded. Metro's chief spokesperson, Dan Stessel, told the Post that the woman was "in labor, but stable." Twitter and other social media outlets quickly spread the news, with one user calling it "my nightmare" and another seemingly a bit more in the holiday spirit, calling the event "a good reason for delays." According to the article, the incident caused a 15-20 minute delay. …

On New Year's Eve, Metro trains will run later than usual for a weekday.
This New Year's Eve, "hurrying to make the last Metro" will not be a good excuse to gulp down the Champagne: Metro will remain open until 2 a.m. on New Year's Eve (technically New Year's Day by that time) "for the benefit of holiday revelers," Metro reported on its website. Here's the holiday schedule for Metro: On Christmas Eve, Metro will be open for regular weekday service. The Metrorail system will be open from 5 a.m. to midnight. The prevention program costs about $250,000, according to The Washington Post.
Metro is hoping a new ad campaign will help prevent suicides at its stations. This program is a direct response to incidents since 2009 in which 33 people jumped in front of Metro trains, according to a Washington Post report. Twenty-six of those died, the Post said. One of the latest deaths occurred in early August, when a man jumped in front of a train as it approached the Rockville station. The man intentionally placed himself in front of the Red Line train headed northbound toward the Shady Grove station, officials said. By the end of September, 13 stations will have signs posting prevention hotline numbers and other ways to get help. After major work on the Green Line last weekend, this week Green catches a break. But if you’re transferring to the Red Line there’s some major track work going on that might affect your commute. There’s also Orange and Blue line work going on between two stations that may affect Green Line transfers. Green Liners you’ll catch a break this weekend, Oct. 14 through Oct. 15, unless you’re planning to transfer to Red, Blue, Orange or Yellow lines. Watch out for construction hot spots on any of the above. But the good news is, Sunday is construction free, and Metro will open two hours early, at 5 a.m., to accommodate the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial events.
